Have you ever felt afraid and abandoned by God? Known the pain of being forgotten and ignored by the One you need the most? I know I have. But the truth is, during those times I found that God wasn’t forgetting me, I was forgetting God. It used to be that I only searched for God when it was convenient for me, and usually when I needed something. When times were good, my relationship with the Lord took the back burner. I would go happily on my way until the next crisis hit. But the Bible tells us we are to constantly search after God. To truly seek Him in good times and bad. To seek God literally means to seek His face, or His presence. And to truly seek Him means having a passion and a hunger burning so deep in your heart and soul that you want to feel His presence not only during times of trouble, but in every minute of every day! A passion that leads to being committed to not merely seeking Him, but in finding Him!

1 Chronicles 16:11-12

I’m in the process of recovering from surgery, and its been harder then I thought it would be. I’m also not ashamed to say being laid up has provided an easy path of self pity to travel. But I’m determined not to let those feelings take up permanent residence. Instead in my weakness I will seek God’s strength. In my doubt I will marvel at the mighty wonders He was already performed in my life. And in my hardships I will take comfort knowing God is always with me, providing blessings along the way. We all face times of suffering, and experience challenges. But how wonderful it is to know there is nothing we have to go through alone. So seek God’s face, and lean on His strength. And let His love, peace, and guidance see you safely through every storm.

Today I encourage you to pause, just for a moment, and think of a time when you felt God’s presence. Did he carry you through a rough time? How did that experience effect your relationship with Him?

Did you know there is great power found in a grateful heart? It’s true, and they have research to prove it! “Scientific studies have proven gratitude increases neural modulation in the brain, in the prefrontal cortex, which regulates negative emotions. It also activates dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for making you feel good.” That’s scientific talk that basically states that the results of maintaining an attitude of gratitude is instant happiness that will prompt you to continue to giving thanks.

A good friend of mine once confessed that she had been hospitalized due to a nervous breakdown and what helped her most to recover was reading her Bible and writing down 12 things she was thankful for in a journal each day- a practice she still swears by and practices today!

Gratitude also curbs other symptoms of anxiety, helping us to deal with the disorder more effectively according to a study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information in the United States.

  • It can reduce Insomnia
  • Reduces stress hormones in the body
  • And can positively impact bodily functions, memory, and emotions.

 BUT more importantly, giving thanks is something that each one of us are commanded to practice on a daily basis; anxiety, or no anxiety. (Phil. 4:6-7Col. 3:151 Thes. 5:16-18, and many others)

So, How Can We Best Practice Maintaining an Attitude of Gratitude? 

(These are just a few suggestions and if you have any other proven habits, I hope you’ll share them with us as well)

1.) Keep a Journal

Write down all that is causing any anxiety, sadness, fear, etc. And then find at least 3 things to be thankful for right now. Even if it’s, ‘I’m thankful I woke up and I’m still breathing!’

2.)  Stop to Meditate

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” – Phil. 4:8

 Focus on all the good things in your life and start thanking God for each. You’ll eventually become a thankful person by nature.

3.) Share Your Gratitude with Others 

This may seem silly, but it goes a long way towards practicing gratitude.

Writing down your thoughts,  dwelling on the positives and then sharing your positive thoughts with God and others will go along way to develop an attitude of gratitude and squelch all those anxious thoughts that try to take over.

As we celebrate this thanksgiving day, I pray that as the autumn leaves shower the land with their beauty, the Lord will shower you with His love, blessings, and goodness. Wishing you all a very happy holiday!

Lord, give me a thankful heart,
one that is appreciative
one that to all Your blessings
is attuned and sensitive.

Let it be a heart,
that sings its daily praise
let it be my heartfelt gratitude
that to You I earnestly raise.

Let me have a heart,
truly thankful for all things
no matter what in my life
You should choose to bring

Let my heart flow with,
the rivers of Your peace
so my appreciation to You
I may continually release.

Lord, give me a thankful heart,
one that is steadily hopeful
let it be the heart of one . . .

Two Are Better Than One – 1 Chronicles 10-12

 

1 Chronicles 10-12

In our reading today Saul has died and David is made king over all of Israel. It was a long journey for David from shepherd boy to regent, and a journey he couldn’t have made without the help of many along the way. In Psalm 89:20-21 God says, “I have found David My servant; with My holy oil I have anointed him, with whom My hand will be established; My arm will also strengthen him.” God strengthened David in part by sending strong, noble, and faithful men to surround him.

God never asks us to go it alone. He knows the plans He has for us. Wonderful, glorious plans. And He will send helpers to us to accomplish those plans. Just like He did with David, God will send both believers and nonbelievers into our lives to strengthen, support, challenge, guide, protect, encourage, and love us. From Jonathon, the son of David’s greatest enemy, to men who would eagerly give their lives for their king, God provided mighty friends to help David fulfill what the Lord intended.

Chapters 11 and 12 are filled with name after name of men who came to the aid of David. Men who were sent by God. Men who performed great acts of valor and showed unwavering loyalty to help bring David victory over his enemies. Men like Amasai. “Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said, ‘We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of Jesse! Success, success to you, and success to those who help you, for your God will help you.’” And the Bible goes on to say, “Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God.” (v. 12:22)

These great friendships were not lost on David. When three brave men broke through the camp of the Philistines just to bring David a drink from the well in Bethlehem, instead of drinking the water, “he poured it out to the Lord” (v. 11:18) David understood the value of the sacrifice these men were willing to take on his behalf and wanted to thank the Lord for the blood they were willing to shed. Can you imagine being the type of friend that would lay down your life for another, or having a friend that would do the same? As believers we do have a friend like that….Jesus Christ.

Jesus shed His precious blood and gave His life for us; His friends. In John 15:13-15 He says, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” Because of the friend we have in Jesus and His example, shouldn’t we want to be that same kind of friend to others? To extend the same grace and love described by the Apostle Paul? “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:7-8)

Life can be hard, and at times lonely. But God never intends our walk with Him to be one of solitude. We all need the love and support of godly friends. I’ve heard it said that if you can count your true friends on the fingers of one hand, you are blessed. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 reminds us, “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can revisit him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.” My prayer for you today is that God will bless you and send you a mighty friend if you need one, and send you out as a mighty friend to be a blessing to another.

Every good thing we have in our lives is a gift from God. And He blesses us not because we are special or worthy, but because He is our loving Father who gives to His children freely and generously. And out of a heart of thankfulness we in turn need to be cheerful givers. For everything we give back to God was His to begin with. And remembering the Lord as the source of everything good, fills our hearts with generosity and the desire to show the same mercy to others God shows to us each and every day!
