1 Corinthians 6:12

Through Christ we have freedom. Because of His fulfillment of the Law, we now live under grace. Unfortunately, like the Corinthians, some Christians use that grace as an excuse for sinful behavior. But Paul makes it very clear. Although all things may be lawful, they may not be profitable The liberties we receive through Jesus are only good if they don’t bring us into bondage, or make fellow believers stumble in their walk. Anything that we value above God, whether it be people, substances, or things, is sin. And any behavior we exhibit that harms or offends other Christians is also sin. As followers of Jesus, the grace He died to give us means that we are called to live by a supernatural standard. A standard only achieved when we live for the Lord, die to self, walk in truth and love, and submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 11:26

When it came to observing the Lord’s Supper, the church at Corinth grossly missed the mark. It was their practice to hold “suppers” in which the rich and esteemed ate and drank first. They gorged themselves with the finest food and choicest wine, leaving little to none for those considered lower in status. Their gluttony and drunkenness caused Paul to chastise them for their distorted view of communion. When we partake of the Lord’s Supper, we do so in remembrance of the broken body and spilled blood of Jesus. It is a holy and sacred practice of praising the sacrifice of Christ and His gift of salvation. And we do it as one. As the body of Christ we eat of the bread and drink from the cup proclaiming the Lord’s death until His glorious return.

Making changes is never easy. Everywhere we turn, we are faced with temptation. But no matter what the Enemy entices us with, we have the power to say no. How? Through the power of God. The Lord promises that no matter how strong the urge, when we give that urge to Him, we can overcome. For He is faithful to never allow us to be tempted beyond our breaking point. And not only we will not break, God vows to give us an escape from any and all temptation. So when you feel weak, stand in God’s strength and you’ll be victorious every time!

1 Corinthians 6:11 

Once we were eternally separated from God, dead in our sins. We practiced all kinds of worldly debauchery. But then we received Jesus as our Savior. And now the heart that once craved immorality, longs for the things of Christ. For we have been washed, sanctified, and justified through the blood of Jesus. So the change in our heart should be followed by a change in our actions. For how can we be shining examples of Christ to the world, if our lives mimic the lives of the unsaved. May we each walk in His Spirit and truth, “so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.” (Phil. 2:15)

Each of us is blessed with our own unique talents and gifts. But no matter how talented we are, when those gifts aren’t used with a foundation of love, they mean nothing. God blesses us so that we in turn can bless others. That means using our spiritual gifts with unselfish motives of furthering God’s kingdom. And when we fully understand the depths of love that God has for us, everything we do will come from hearts of thankfulness. For even though faith and hope are vital to the Christian walk, love is the greatest of all. And we can love, because He first loved us!

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

Loving others isn’t an easy thing to do. And although no one can love as unconditionally and perfectly like Jesus, we do need to love each other with that same Christlike love. That means practicing patience and kindness even when we are frustrated with those around us. Love isn’t envious of another’s blessings or based in arrogance and pride. It doesn’t intentionally provoke others nor keep a record of wrongs committed against us. A love like is isn’t possible on our own, but through God, all things are possible, including loving the unlovable.

1 Corinthians 16:14

In his letter to the Corinthians Paul instructed the people to be alert, stand firm, and be strong. But above all else, whatever they did, both great and small, was to be done in love. And Paul calls us to do the same. For if we are truly followers of Jesus, our goal should be to become reflections of His character. And one of the greatest characteristics of Jesus is His unmerited and unconditional love for all. We too can exhibit that same love when we allow the Holy Spirit to work on our hearts, softening them to allow Christ’s love to flow through to others.
