February 13th – Proverbs 31:8-9

Proverbs 31:8-9

Throughout the Bible we read how seriously the Lord takes the plight of the poor, the widowed, and the orphaned. And He let’s us know exactly what He expects our treatment of them to be. “Learn to do good; seek justice, reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.” (Is. 1:17) We are God’s mirror images here on earth, and as His representatives our lives and behavior should reflect His just and holy character. To follow the Lord means to practice justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with Him. To be living testimonies of the fruit of the spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. (Gal. 5:22-23) One day soon Jesus will return. But until that time, it is up to us to demonstrate to the world what it means to act justly and to love mercy. To stand up against oppression and abuse of those who cannot stand up for themselves.

November 6th – 1 Peter 4:16

1 Peter 4:16

Some scholars say that back in Peter’s time, being called a Christian was used as an insult by unbelievers. But we know there is nothing more wonderful than being known as a follower of Christ. And what an honor it is to suffer for Jesus’ sake. For one day, His glory will be revealed to all. And every knee will bow, every mouth confess Him as Lord. So any pain we experience as a Christian, we will do so thankfully, boldly, and without shame. Because nowhere do we resemble Christ more than when we endure hardship for His name and glory. In a world that tries to remove God from everything, Christian’s will face mockery, abuse, and even death. But oh the rewards we will receive when we stand before the Lord as overcomers. For just as we share in Christ’s suffering, we will share in His glory!

2 Peter 2:20

We’ve all heard stories about people who after being freed, return to their abusers. We shake our heads in disbelief and wonder why they they would ever go back. Yet that’s exactly what we do when return to our sinful lifestyle of bondage after receiving freedom through Jesus Christ. As believers we are no longer enslaved to the desires of the world. But sadly, many of us go back to the destructive patterns of the past. We willingly walk back into our jail cells and slap on the cuffs of sin. And each time we return to that prison, we find it harder to break free. Because when we go back, our hearts harden to sin just a little bit more, making it that much more tolerable. It is only when we truly believe in our hearts and minds that happiness can only be found in God, can we walk away from the hold of sin and never again return to the abuse from the Enemy!
