Week 4 – Living In God’s Love (1 John 4:7-12)

Love is the very foundation of the Gospel. It is the essence of who God is and the driving force behind His plan for redemption. In 1 John 4:7-12, we see how deeply love is intertwined with our faith. God’s love was so profound that He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the ultimate price for our sins. This act of sacrificial love is the cornerstone of our salvation, demonstrating the depth of God’s love for us. If we claim to follow Jesus, yet fail to love others as He did, we must question the authenticity of our faith. True faith in Christ is reflected in how we love, for love is the evidence of God’s presence in our lives. If God’s love truly abides in us, it will naturally flow out in our actions, words, and relationships. To love like Jesus is not just a suggestion, it’s a commandment that defines our identity as His followers. When we love others, we are fulfilling God’s will and demonstrating that His love has indeed transformed our hearts. Without love, our faith is hollow, but with love, we embody the very heart of the Gospel.

Week 1 – Understanding Faith – James 2:14-26

We all know people who claim to be a Christian, yet whose lives tell a different story. True faith in Christ is more than just words or intellectual agreement. It’s evident in our actions and the way we live. James tells us good works are not a means to earn salvation, but a natural result of being saved and transformed by God. When we truly encounter God’s grace, it changes our hearts, leading us to love and serve others as an expression of our faith. Which is why faith without works is dead. And why a professed faith that doesn’t produce good deeds is empty and lifeless. Because such a faith fails to demonstrate the transformative power of God in our life. Genuine faith is alive and active, bearing fruit through acts of kindness, compassion, and obedience to God’s commands. It reveals a heart that has been touched by God’s love and is compelled to reflect that love in practical ways. And why our good works are evidence of a living faith and a transformed heart. Showing the world that our relationship with God is real and true.

Romans 7:24-25

Sometimes no matter how hard we try, we find ourselves doing the wrong thing. Paul knew this struggle well, always feeling torn between his desire to do good and the pull of sin. Freedom in Christ means we are liberated from the power of sin, but it does not necessarily remove the desire to sin. This ongoing battle highlights our need for the fruit of the Spirit, which cultivates virtues like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control within us. Through the Holy Spirit, we gain strength to resist sinful desires and make choices that honor God. Paul’s acknowledgment of his struggle and gratitude for Christ’s deliverance reminds us that we are not alone in our battles. By relying on the Holy Spirit, we can navigate this conflict, allowing God’s transformative power to work within us. As we grow in spiritual maturity, the fruit of the Spirit helps us to align our actions with our new identity in Christ, continually moving toward a life that reflects His love and righteousness.

1 Peter 2:16

Peter warns us against misusing the freedom given to us by God to justify sinful behavior. For true freedom in Christ comes with the responsibility to live righteously. When we claim our liberty in Christ, it’s not a license to sin or to excuse actions that go against God’s commands. To do so means we don’t understand what it means to be a free servant of God. Instead of masking evil with the guise of freedom, we are called to live as slaves of God, demonstrating His righteousness and love through our actions. Similarly, submission to human authorities must be with our higher allegiance to God’s moral law. Just because a law permits or even mandates certain actions doesn’t mean they align with God’s will. True freedom involves discerning and obeying God’s principles above all, even when it contradicts societal or governmental demands. By living out our freedom in service to God, we reflect His character and uphold His standards, ensuring our choices honor Him rather than exploit His grace.

Actively pursuing peace is a characteristic of God’s children. Because they demonstrate the harmony and love that Jesus came to bring into the world. But being a peacemaker involves more than just avoiding conflict. It requires courage, empathy, and a deep commitment to understanding and resolving differences. We can be examples of the peace of Jesus by practicing forgiveness, extending grace, and seeking reconciliation in our relationships. This peace is not passive but active, pushing us to bridge gaps, mend broken bonds, and create environments where love and respect flourish. By advocating for peace throughout the world we become agents of God’s transformative power, showing that true peace stems from His love. As peacemakers, we align our actions with Jesus’ teachings, and mirror His heart. That’s why it’s a blessing to always strive for peace. For it aligns us with God’s divine purpose and reveals us as His children, committed to spreading the peace of Jesus wherever we go.

This obedience is not burdensome but a joyful expression of our devotion and gratitude for His sacrificial love. It also serves as a testament to others, showing the transformative power of a life lived in Christ. When we obey Jesus we grow in our relationship with Him, experiencing a deeper connection and intimacy. Our obedience is a tangible way to honor Him, reflecting His love to the world. We all know that actions speak louder than words. But in the case of Christians, both our words and our actions are to be living testimonies of love. The same love that God so generously and unconditionally shows us. Meaning our words should echo the compassion and grace of our Heavenly Father. Our conversations sprinkled with kindness, encouragement, and affirmation to uplift those around us. Likewise, our actions should mirror the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. Meaning we should be the first to reach out, offering help to the needy and extending forgiveness to the brokenhearted. It’s through these expressions of love that others can experience the depth of God’s love for them. Because as we abide in God’s love, it overflows our hearts and minds. And we become channels of His divine love, radiating His light and warmth to a world in need. Let us, therefore, walk in love, following the example set forth by Christ. And shine brightly as beacons of God’s love in a world longing for His embrace.

We are not born naturally loving and caring about others. Instead we enter this world selfish, sinful, and thinking about only ourselves. Love is a gift given and created by God who is love. And it is His amazing love, that awakens the love inside of us. A love we can only to show to others, because He first loved us. As we grasp the depth and magnitude of God’s unfailing love, a natural response emerges within us. To love Him in return Him with all of our heart, soul, and strength. And to show that love through our words, actions, obedience, and devotion to His will. Loving God in return isn’t just an obligation; it’s a joyful privilege. It’s a love that seeks intimacy with Him, yearning to dwell in His presence and abide in His love. As we respond to God’s love with love, our lives become a living testimony of His transformative power. One that draws others into a deeper relationship with Him. Let us, therefore, embrace the call to love God fervently. Knowing that He first loved us and continues to pour out His love upon us each day.

Luke 6:45

We have an old apple tree on our property. Upon first glance it looks healthy and strong. But the true test lies in the fruit it bears. And that fruit is sparse, rotten, and hangs from almost barren branches. That’s because looks are deceiving. And a tree that looks good and strong on the outside, might be rotten and dead on the inside. So it is in life. A person may project a positive image, but the true quality of their character is revealed by their actions and the fruit of their deeds. When our hearts are filled with grace, love, and mercy, we naturally produce an abundance of good fruit in our lives. On the other hand, when our hearts are filled with negativity and selfishness, our actions and words will mirror that. That’s why we should always strive to cultivate an abundance of Christlike love within us. Because such a love will manifest as blessings, kindness, and positivity in our relationships and in the world around us. And we’ll produce an overflowing abundance of good fruit all for the glory of God!

Proverbs 28:1

“The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.”

“The lady doth protest too much, methinks,” is a famous line from the Shakespeare play, Hamlet. And now it’s used when we think someone is excessive in defending themselves. For no one looks more guilty than when they are trying to convince us otherwise. Because those who are truly blameless don’t need to resort to such passionate protests. And as Christians, we needn’t defend ourselves at all. For we have the greatest Defender we will ever need in God. In times of adversity, when the world may question our intentions and actions, we can find peace knowing when we lives of obedience to His will, the Lord will wrap us in His love and protection. And when we place our trust in His divine plan, we can let go of our fears and insecurities. Instead allowing God to take the lead in our defense. So Instead of protesting and battling to prove our worth, we can surrender. Surrender to the guidance and mercy of the Lord. Recognizing that true strength lies in embracing humility and placing our faith in the divine Orchestrator of our lives.
