Answering God’s Call

March 29th – Matthew 28:19

Matthew 28:19

The number twelve is used 187 times in the Bible. In most cases it is represented as the number of perfection and authority.  And during His ministry on earth Jesus, “…summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. And He appointed twelve so that He could send them out to preach.” (Mark 3:13-14) There wasn’t anything especially remarkable about these men. They weren’t Lords or Princes. Nor were they great scholars or high priests. They were average men who throughout the Gospels we see fail, struggle, and doubt God. Yet Jesus chose them anyway. And He chooses us as well, blessing us with the same commission of sharing the Good News. Because Jesus doesn’t care about our past, our failures, or our social standing. What He wants is a close personal relationship with us. He wants us to love Him, and to tell others about Him so they too can know Him and spend eternity with Him. Will you answer His call?

March 21st – 1 Corinthians 1:26

1 Corinthians 1:26

Do you feel unusable by God? Think you’re too broken, dirty, and wicked to accomplish any good for the Lord? God’s not looking for perfect people to accomplish His goals. In fact, He doesn’t need our help at all. Instead He gives us the blessing of being used by Him. And whether we are given a small purpose like volunteering at church, or being a friend to someone in need, or a large purpose like leading His people or rebuilding His temple, being used by God is a wonderful thing! The Lord loves to use the weak, the simple, the unexpected, and the flawed. And there isn’t a single one of us who isn’t flawed. But it’s said that God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called. So no matter who you are or how imperfect you feel, when it comes to accomplishing His will the Lord can and will use anyone or anything. And that includes you and me!

January 31st – Matthew 9:9

Matthew 9:9

Each of the men Jesus called to be disciples, never once hesitated to follow Him. They didn’t take time to try and clean up their lives. They didn’t take time to wean themselves off the trappings of the world. And they didn’t take time to let go of the people and things of the past for a new and better future. Jesus met them and wanted them right where they were, and in a leap of faith, they answered His call straight away and began a life dedicated to the Lord. Just as He called the disciples, Jesus also calls each of us. “Follow Me!”, cries the Lord. “Follow Me and I’ll give you heavenly riches greater than the world could ever offer. Follow Me and let My love fill your hearts with a peace and joy that can never be shaken. Follow Me and I’ll give You eternal life purchased with My own precious blood. Follow Me, and help save the world!”

December 31st – Matthew 9:9

Matthew 9:9

When Levi the tax collector was at his booth in the city, a man came up to him and said, “Follow Me!” Without a second thought Levi got up, walked out, and immediately began following the man. In that single moment, Levi chose to leave everything behind. He gave up his wealth, influence, and comfort without looking back. It was the best decision Levi ever made. Because that man was Jesus. And following the Lord gave to Levi a wealth many times greater than what he left behind. No longer was he known as the despised tax collector hated by his brothers. Instead Jesus gave him the new name of Matthew, meaning gift of God. And Matthew became a mighty disciple of the Lord. When we too answer the call of Jesus, one day as we stand before Him in heaven He will welcome us in joy and love, declare us innocent, and give to us a new name known only to God!

September 22nd – 2 Timothy 2:15

2 Timothy 2:15

Paul was all about winning souls for Jesus. Though he was imprisoned, shipwrecked, stoned, and left for dead, Paul never lost his faith, or desire to please God. I want that kind of boldness. To have the heart of a lion, fearlessly responding to God’s calling regardless of the circumstances. Because sadly, there have been situations when instead of sharing the Gospel, I remained silent from fear of being ridiculed, rejected, or challenged. Other times I’ve shared the Gospel too aggressively or pompously. I looked down my nose at those who didn’t agree with my beliefs or immediately want to reconcile themselves to God. But not Paul. Even though he was bold, he was also kind. Because Paul understood the importance of representing Jesus. Meaning sharing the message of God’s redeeming love with courage, love, grace, and humility. And that’s how I want to share the the Gospel. In a confident, loving, respectful way, doing all for God’s glory!

September 1st – Jeremiah 1:17

Jeremiah 1:17

Jeremiah faithfully served God for over forty years. But when he first heard the Lord’s call, Jeremiah did like many of us do, he questioned God. After all there was no way such a young man could go out and be the voice of the Lord! So fearfully Jeremiah cried out, “Alas, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak.” (Jeremiah 1:6) And to himself Jeremiah thought, “There must be some mistake. I can’t do this.” But there was no mistake. God knew exactly what He was doing. For in His perfect plan, He created Jeremiah just for this time and this purpose. Before we are born, during creation, God sets each of us apart for the purpose that is uniquely ours. And no matter the calling, whether it be as simple as helping a friend in need, or as hard as delivering a message of doom to a nation, we needn’t fear. We can fulfill the purpose before us knowing if God sees us to it, He’ll see us through it!

There Must Be Some Mistaken – Jeremiah 1

Jeremiah 1

Jeremiah, often called the weeping prophet, was the author of the books of Jeremiah and Lamentations. The son of Hilkiah, Jeremiah was a Levitical priest from the small village of Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. The Lord called Jeremiah to deliver prophecies to the unrepentant people of Judah. He warned them of their soon to be bondage by the Babylonians, and begged them to repent of their sins and turn back to God.

Although he faithfully served God for over forty years, when Jeremiah first heard the call of the Lord he did as many of us do, he questioned God. After all being so young there was no way a Jeremiah could go out and be the voice of the Lord! He cried out, “Alas, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak.” (Jeremiah 1:6) And to himself he thought, “There must be some mistake. I can’t do this.” But there was no mistake. God knew exactly what He was doing. For in His perfect plan, He created Jeremiah just for this time and this purpose.

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.” (Jeremiah 1:5) God knew the purpose He had for Jeremiah because He knew Jeremiah even before the first beat of his heart. And just as intimately as God knew Jeremiah, He knows us. How amazing is that! For Not only did God fearfully and wonderfully create us (Ps. 139:14), He knows us by name,(John 10:3), how long we will live, (Ps. 139:16), and all we were created to be. (Eph. 2:10) And before we are born, He sets us apart for the purpose that is uniquely ours.

Whatever that purpose may be, we can trust that God never intends for us to accomplish it alone, nor in our own strength. When Jeremiah faced the daunting challenge ahead, God reassured him saying, “Do not be afraid of them, For I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.” (Jeremiah vs. 1:8) “They will fight against you, but they will not overcome you, for I am with you to deliver you.” (vs. 1:19)

Although the task God gives may not be an easy or enjoyable one, (Jeremiah himself faced hatred and persecution), God does promise that when we walk in obedience, He will never leave or forsake us, (Heb. 13:5) will be our refuge and strength, (Ps.46:1), and through Him, will make all things possible. (Matt. 19:26).

I love how Dr Charles Stanley says, Each time God calls a servant into action, He essentially says, ‘You can be strong and courageous because I am with you. Victory isn’t about your abilities, your strength, your skill, your armor, your gifts, or your dedication; it has to do with My presence. You can be strong because I will be strong in you.’”

No matter the calling, whether it be as simple as helping a friend in need, or as hard as delivering a message of doom to a nation, the next time you hear God’s voice, don’t ask, “Who me? There must be some mistake!” Remember you were created to be the perfect person for the job, and if God sees you to it, He’ll see you through it. So, as the Lord said to Jeremiah, “Gird up your loins and arise!” (Jeremiah 1:17) There is work to be done!

May 21st – Judges 5:31

Judges 5:31

Tired of being persecuted by the Canaanites, the people cried out to God for a deliverer. When Barak was afraid to answer God’s call, Deborah, a prophetess and judge of Israel, stepped up to the plate. And under His direction, her plan of attack resulted in the defeat of Canaan and it’s king. Yet after the victory, instead of patting herself on the back, Deborah sang a song giving God all the glory. Because she knew that Israel’s win only came through the power of God. Deborah’s story shows us that that no matter who we are, when we are open and willing to be used by God, through His power, we can accomplish great things. All we need is to be open to God’s direction and following His plans. Ready and willing to go to battle to see His will done!

Isaiah 41:10

Isaiah 41:10

After following Moses for forty years, it became Joshua’s turn to lead over two million people. And not just any people, God’s chosen people. But Moses left some sage advice to calm the fears of both Joshua and us. When we get a calling by God, don’t be afraid. Because when He gives us a job to do, God never asks us to do it alone. He is always with us, working hand in hand. Before we even take our first step, the Lord is already ahead of us clearing the path. And He will supply all we need to get the job done. While it’s true through our own power we are limited, through God’s there’s nothing we can’t do! So when you hear God’s call, answer it bravely, boldly, and eagerly. And be prepared to do amazing things!

Here Am I, Send Me! – Isaiah 6

Isaiah 6

The Bible teaches about many prophets. Men and women anointed to be used by God in awesome ways. But far from enjoying peaceful, easy living, God’s prophets were often despised, persecuted, and imprisoned. And the messages they brought, hated and disregarded. Many suffered tragic, violent deaths. Yet they still stayed true to revealing God’s messages. Why? Because of divine encounters with the Lord. Encounters that transformed both their hearts and their lives. …
