Determination

July 23rd – Philippians 3:14-14

Philippians 3:13-14

Many of us find ourselves stuck in the mud, unable to move forward because of our past. Guilt, shame, past sins, and hurts weigh us down, making progress seem impossible. Yet Paul’s life stands as a testament to the transformative power of Christ. Once the greatest persecutor of Christians, Paul experienced the freedom that comes through Christ’s forgiveness and grace. This freedom allows us to release the chains of our past and embrace the future God has for us. By focusing on the prize of our heavenly calling, we can let go of past burdens and pursue our God-given purpose with renewed vigor. Through Christ, we are empowered to forget what lies behind and to strain forward with hope and determination. Our past no longer defines us. Instead, our identity in Christ propels us towards growth and fulfillment. As we press on we discover that our true strength and freedom come from Christ. This enables us to overcome our past and achieve the divine purpose He has set before us.

November 14th – 1 Corinthians 16:13

1 Corinthians 16:13

Football season is in full force. And as a Michigander, I have to say the Detroit Lions with their first place standing in the NFC North, is a rare happening that has fans cheering. Their winning streak is due in large part to the guidance, teaching, and encouragement they receive from their dedicated coaches. God is our great Coach. He guides, teaches, and encourages us to remain vigilant, resolute in faith, and resilient in the face of trials. To never give up hope or give in to fear or discouragement. To stand firm in our beliefs, drawing strength from the hopeful expectation of a future grounded in faith. The call to courage and strength isn’t merely about facing challenges head-on but is deeply rooted in the enduring hope that sustains through difficulties. It’s a reminder that hope isn’t passive, but an active force that fortifies endurance. Allowing us to victoriously navigate life’s obstacles with unwavering faith and steadfast determination.

November 2nd – Romans 15:13

Romans 15:13

I love the quote which says, “Hope, like a fleeting ember, may dim in the shadows of despair, but it can be rekindled with the spark of determination and faith.” For followers of Jesus, hope is not a fleeting emotion. Instead it’s a profound, enduring quality that is rooted in faith and trust in God. When our hope is anchored in God, it becomes an unwavering force. This is because our faith in God is a belief in His unchanging character, promises, and eternal love. Even in the face of adversity we trust that He has a greater plan. And this trust sustains our hope. Our faith in God reassures us that He is with us. Constantly, God is guiding us through the storms of life, and working for our ultimate good. This assurance transforms hope from a fragile wish into a steadfast conviction. Allowing it to persist through the most challenging of times, providing comfort, strength, and resilience when we need it most. And by relying on God, we can experience a wellspring of joy and peace that empowers us to endure life’s trials.

May 5th – Philippians 3:13

Philippians 3:13

We can be our own worst enemies. Always replaying past mistakes in our head, never forgiving ourselves, and feeling too worthless for God. No wonder many believers seem to get stuck in the mud. Always spinning their wheels and unable to move forward. But Jesus made it clear that having a relationship with Him involves growth, change, and action. And the action needed is letting go of our past mistakes and instead focusing on our future. The glorious future planned for us as followers of Christ. We all sin daily, and need God’s forgiveness. And He’ll give it freely and generously when we come to Him in true repentance and sorrow. More than that when we confess, God promises to wipe our slates clean. He’ll remember our sins no more and remove them as far as the east us from the west. (1 John 1:9) So if God can forget our past, who are to remember? All we need to do is learn from our mistakes, and move forward with renewed focus and determination.

How Bad Do You Want it? – Genesis 32

Genesis 32

Are you familiar with the story in Genesis 32 where Jacob wrestles with God? The two tussle until daybreak, only ending when Jacob receives a crippling blow. A blow which disabled him with a limp for the rest of his life. And all because Jacob wanted God’s blessing so bad, he refused to give up and let go. …

August 29th – Acts 5:41

Acts 5:41

When the Council of Pharisees and the chief priests had Peter and the apostles beaten for spreading the message of Jesus, you’d think they would have stopped preaching. But instead, bloodied and bruised, they rejoiced for being worthy of suffering for the Lord. As Christians we risk persecution and even physical safety for sharing the gospel. Yet like Peter, instead of defeating us, it should empower us to stand firm in faith. For God tells us to consider it a great blessing to suffer and identify with our Savior. Because the Enemy saves his greatest attacks for the strongest of Christians. Those who are actively working for God in expanding His kingdom. The last thing he wants is for us to share the Good News of Jesus and rip souls out of his hands. But that’s what we are called to do, and we need to have courage and determination to serve God above all else. So rejoice when you have the honor of suffering for Jesus, the One who suffered to save you!
