Disappointment

December 30th – John 1:9

John 1:9

After Christmas ends and the lights come down, many of us feel an unexpected letdown. The decorations are packed away, the music grows quiet, and the world feels less bright. What once felt magical now feels ordinary again. Some of us carry unanswered prayers into the new year. While others carry a loneliness we hoped the season would fix. John 1:9 reminds us there is a true Light. A Light who came into the world for everyone. This Light doesn’t fade with the season. Jesus remains when the celebrations are over. He meets us in the quiet and the disappointment. He  shines His light into weary hearts and uncertain days. When joy feels distant, His presence is still near.  Because He goes before us into the unknown. Walking with us when the path feels long. The light of Jesus offers us comfort, direction, and hope, guiding us forward when the sparkle is gone. And He leads us into the new year with a light that never goes out.

Reflection Question:
Where do I feel the post-Christmas letdown most, and how can I invite Jesus, the true Light, to meet me there?

Prayer Prompt:
Lord Jesus, You are the Light that never fades. Meet me in the quiet after the celebrations and shine into the places where I feel weary or disappointed. Help me carry Your light into the new year, trusting that You are with me every step of the way.

December 26th – Hebrews 13:18

Hebrews 13:18

The day after Christmas often carries a quiet letdown, as the lights dim and the celebrations fade. The tree comes down, the anticipation is gone, and normal life begins to creep back in. But Hebrews 13:18 reminds us that faith is meant to be lived out with sincerity, not just felt in special moments. Christmas stirs our hearts, but it was never meant to be the end of our devotion. And the wonder we felt at the manger is meant to carry us forward. Our faith shouldn’t shrink once the gifts are opened, it should grow deeper. Because Jesus didn’t come only for one holy day, but for every ordinary one that follows.

When emotions fade, truth remains. Faith anchored in Christ does not depend on a season. It’s lived out daily with honesty and trust. We can still pray, still hope, still walk uprightly before Him. For the God of Christmas is the God of our everyday.

Reflection Question:
As the excitement of Christmas fades, how can you intentionally carry the hope and faith of Christmas into your everyday life?

Prayer Prompt:
Lord, thank You for meeting me in the joy of Christmas and in the quiet that follows. Help my faith not fade with the season, but grow stronger each day. Remind me that You are the same faithful God in every ordinary moment. Amen.

May 31st – Luke 23:21

Luke 23:21

Have you ever been disappointed by Jesus? You’re probably saying to yourself right now, “What!?  Of course not!” But if we’re being honest, wouldn’t the answer be yes? Because the truth is, Jesus doesn’t always meet our expectations. He doesn’t promise a life free from suffering, nor to give us what we want. But what He does promise is to be our shelter in the worst of storms, and to provide for our every need. How do you handle the disappointments life throws your way? Do you trust in Jesus, His infinite wisdom, and His love for you? Or like the crowds in Jerusalem do you reject Him, turning away in bitterness and anger? Philippians 4:19 reminds us, “My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Jesus Christ.” As followers of Jesus, we can have confidence that God knows best. And He knows what we need, when we need it. So trust in Him and His great love for you. And when you look back on life’s disappointments, don’t be surprised to find that they are in fact blessings that ended up being far greater than you could have ever expected!

April 13th – Numbers 23:19

Numbers 23:19

We’ve all heard it said that people will let you down, but God never will. We are fallen beings living in a fallen world. That means at some point in our lives, we will be hurt, betrayed, and disappointed by other people. And we too will do our share of hurting others. But in good times and bad, joy and sorrow, we can turn to God. Because our Lord will always be there to perfectly love and comfort us. Unlike our sinful humanity which lies, and changes its mind, God is faithful and reliable. Never will He hurt or betray us. The words He speaks are always honest and true. And when the Lord makes a promise, He will always act on and fulfill it. Even when we face times of doubt and uncertainty, God remains true. And when others walk away from us, He remains steadfast in His love. Unlike humans who are fickle and unreliable, we can forever trust in God’s goodness and character.

September 20th – Habakkuk 3:17

Habakkuk 3:17

A pastor once famously said, “Disappointments are inevitable. Discouragement is a choice.” There is never a more true test of our faith than when God lets suffering into our lives. During times of trials do we still trust God and cling to Him even tighter? Or do we curse God and turn away from Him in despair? The prophet Habakkuk faced a similar decision. As a judgement from the Lord, the Babylonians were preparing to invade Judah. Destruction of Israel would follow and its people were headed for captivity. Yet even though his world was crumbling around him, and there would be no intervening from God, Habakkuk could still rejoice. For the silver lining in his dark cloud was God’s justice and mercy. And by focusing on God’s goodness, the prophet could say, “I will exult in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.” (Hab. 3:18) We may not always rejoice in our circumstances. But we can always rejoice in our Lord!

February 19th – Romans 5:5

Romans 5:5

We will all face hardships in our lives. And one of things that gets us through the bad times is hope. But where we place our hope can mean the difference between enduring the storm with peace and joy, or disappointment and shame. The fallen world in which we live, offers a hope that is fleeting and untrustworthy. However when we place our hope in God we can face any trial with confidence and perseverance. Because the unchanging, unmerited, and unconditional love of God which fills our hearts with a proven, unshakable, hope that comes from Him alone.
