Doers

October 30th – 1 John 3:18

1 John 3:18

I’ve heard it said that words without action are like a heart without a beat; both are useless. The apostle John tells us that as God’s children, we need to be doers. Because for a Christian, the word love should be a verb, not a noun. It’s easy to use our mouths to proclaim our devotion, but it is our actions that truly show the state of our hearts. If our hearts are filled with God’s love for others, that love will be manifested into loving works, not empty words. For Jesus Himself actively put into practice the love He preached. Throughout His time on this earth, Christ healed, taught, fed, and comforted others in both “deed and truth.” And in the greatest example of all, He sacrificed Himself so that we could live eternal. So if we say we are His followers, it’s not enough to just feel love towards others. We are to act on that love, exampling the selfless, sacrificial, agape love, God shows to us.

July 14th – James 1:25

James 1:25

James describes the Word of God as the perfect law of liberty. Why? Because in it we learn the gospel of Jesus Christ, which gives us freedom from sin, bondage, and death. And the more time we spend in the Bible, the freer we become. Which is why James stresses that we need to “look intently” at what God says. In the ancient Greek language, to “look intently” spoke of a penetrating examination. To peer so intently, that a person would go to great extremes, even physical, to get a better look. Adam Clark calls “looking intently” as taking the time to, “see and examine the state of his soul, the grace of his God, the extent of his duty, and the height of the promised glory.” Being able to both own and read the Bible is a privilege we should never take for granted. And when it comes to the Word of God, James promises great blessings for those who instead of being forgetful hearers, become effectual doers!

James 1:22

The Bible is more than just a good book to read from time to time. The Bible is the inerrant Word of God. And as such, we need to be not just readers or hearers, but doers of God’s Word. The Bible is our handbook for life. It shows us how to live, how to treat others, and how to please God. Luke 11:28 tells us that all who hear the Word of God and put it into practice are blessed. And although walking according to God’s Word isn’t always easy, it is always beneficial. Because abiding in the Lord and His Word, gives us everything we need to become doers, producing good fruits for the glory of God and His kingdom.
