Ephesus

Pay Close Attention – 1 Timothy 4:1-6:21

While Paul traveled to Macedonia, he left behind his beloved Timothy to take charge of the church at Ephesus. It was quite a daunting job indeed. Timothy was young and inexperienced. And the problems of the church included the teaching of false doctrines, misconduct, and apostasy. But Paul believed Timothy had what it took to get the job done, and the faith to see him through. And so Paul writes a letter to his beloved friend encouraging, guiding, and warning him to pay close attention to not only the conduct of the church, but more importantly his own. Lest the message of the gospel be discredited.

December 12th – Revelation 2:1-7

Revelation 2:1-7

I love “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. And one of my favorite parts is when frustrated by the commercialism, Charlie Brown cries out, “Isn’t there anyone who can tell me what Christmas is all about?” With all of the pressures of getting ready for the holidays, it’s easy to forget the reason for the season, the birth of Christ. The church at Ephesus received a strong warning for getting caught up in their busyness and forgetting their first love, Jesus. And we should heed their warning. For Christmas isn’t about the decorations, food, parties, presents, and traditions. Instead it’s about God’s great love in that He sent His only begotten Son to save the world. So may we not get lost in the trappings of the season and remember our first love. The Lamb of God who came to adorn us with His mercy and grace.

November 9th – 2 Timothy 3:16

2 Timothy 3:16

Members of the church at Ephesus struggled with outside influences trying to mislead them away from sound biblical doctrine. And sadly, these same influences are still alive in today’s culture. Our society is filled with immorality, false religions, and an “everything goes” attitude. Today’s churches are trading God’s truth for “feel good religion”, and believers are being led astray. But thankfully, as Christian’s we know there is truth to be found in the Word of God. For as Psalm 119:160 tells us, “The sum of Your Word is truth, and every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.” The Bible is our God given guide to life, and every word written on its pages true. And not just true, but eternally true. So rejoice and give thanks, knowing that when we cling to its contents, we stand on an foundation of truth no lie can shake.

Walking In The Light – 1 John 1

1 John 1

When John was in Ephesus he learned of false teachers infecting and dividing the church. And so he responded with this letter reminding believers of the foundational beliefs of the faith, and giving them assurance of their salvation. He packs a lot into this first chapter,  including the most beautiful teaching, “God is Light”. …
