False Doctrine

September 14th – Galatians 1:8

Galatians 1:8

Paul tells us to fear those who teach a false gospel because they are accursed and their message leads to death. Whether it’s an ear tickling gospel, a prosperity gospel, or a works based gospel, if it doesn’t line up with God’s gospel, it’s a false gospel. False gospels keep us chained to rules and laws. They lead to destruction by telling us there are many roads to God. And false gospels tell us that through our own efforts we can earn everlasting life. But the one true gospel of Jesus Christ gives us freedom and joy, not bondage and despair. It wipes clean our record, declaring us innocent and blameless. As fallen people with fallen hearts, we cannot fathom such a pure, perfect, and unconditional love as God’s. A love whose height knows no limits, and whose depth knows no end. And most wonderful of all, a love not earned but offered freely to everyone who receives Jesus as their Savior. This is the Good News of Jesus Christ. And this is the one and only true gospel!

August 14th – Titus 1:7

Titus 1:7

The church at Crete was struggling, so Paul instructed Titus to appoint elders as overseers. Not an easy job, because the church was being influenced by the morally corrupt Cretan culture. The men Titus chose had to be spiritual, with characters above reproach. For they would need strength against the evil and ungodly pulls of the world.  Much like today, the believers at Crete lived in a society which was trying to rid itself of God. But no matter what this wicked world says or does, the Lord calls us to hold fast to the truth of His Word. For we too are overseers in God’s church. Elders who need to lead godly lives, allowing Christ to work in and through us. Drawing others to Him through kindness, goodness, honesty, and patience. And when we know God’s truths and hold them in our hearts, we won’t be led astray by false teachers, wrong doctrines, and those “who turn away from the truth” (Titus 1:14).

November 9th – 2 Timothy 3:16

2 Timothy 3:16

Members of the church at Ephesus struggled with outside influences trying to mislead them away from sound biblical doctrine. And sadly, these same influences are still alive in today’s culture. Our society is filled with immorality, false religions, and an “everything goes” attitude. Today’s churches are trading God’s truth for “feel good religion”, and believers are being led astray. But thankfully, as Christian’s we know there is truth to be found in the Word of God. For as Psalm 119:160 tells us, “The sum of Your Word is truth, and every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.” The Bible is our God given guide to life, and every word written on its pages true. And not just true, but eternally true. So rejoice and give thanks, knowing that when we cling to its contents, we stand on an foundation of truth no lie can shake.

July 15th – Galatians 2:4

Galatians 2:4

The gospel as told in the Word of God is perfect and complete. Yet many try distort it’s message of freedom through the blood of Jesus Christ. They add, take away, and twist the scriptures to fit their worldly agendas. They mandate ungodly rules and rituals needed to obtain salvation, forgiveness, and blessings. And Paul says be alert, for they are everywhere. These “false brethren” don’t come with signs, bells, and whistles, announcing their arrival. Instead they slowly sneak their false doctrine into our hearts and minds, leading us back into the very bondage Jesus gave His blood to free us from. So to defend ourselves, we need to spend time daily in the Word of God. We need to know it’s truths and stand on it’s promises. For it is our greatest shield against attacks from all enemies both outside and within.

May 23rd – 2 John 1:8

2 John 1:8

Throughout history there have been false teachers and wolves in sheep’s clothing. Those who deny the authority of Jesus and spread false doctrines. John tells us to watch out for such people. Because following them and their twisted scriptures can cause us to lose our rewards. Not the reward of salvation, for that is secure through the blood of Jesus, but instead our spiritual rewards. John cautions that we need to always be on alert and check all we hear against what the Bible actually says. Abiding in Jesus means abiding in His Word. And the knowledge of God’s Word is the best defense against any attack of deceit from the Enemy!

The One True Gospel – (Galatians 1)

Galatians 1

After returning to Antioch, Paul learned that Judaizers, (Jewish Christians who believed in salvation through both grace and works) were stirring up trouble in the churches of Galatia. These Judaizers were teaching a false gospel of Gentiles being required to keep the Jewish laws in order to be saved. So in response, Paul wrote a letter to the members calling them back to the one true gospel.
