Friends

December 21st – Romans 16:1-16

Romans 16:1-16

At the end of every movie the list of credits roll, listing the hundreds of people it took to make the film. Yet it’s always the star who gets the credit. The apostle Paul reminds us about the importance of remembering those who contribute to the ministry of the Lord. Those who aren’t necessarily in the “spotlight”, but whose work is invaluable just the same. In the eyes of the Lord no one is unimportant and as the Bible teaches us, no one is called to go it alone.  Not even Paul. There are 27 of Paul’s friends who helped him. And he takes the time to list each of them with love and adoration. As Christians we are called to step outside our own busy schedule to help one another. Not only to glorify God, but also because we don’t know what the future holds or the help we ourselves may need. So today, acknowledge and thank those who have helped you on your spiritual path. And thank God for sending them into your lives!

November 25th – Proverbs 17:17

Proverbs 17:17

I’m thankful for the Friend we have in Jesus

Who doesn’t want a friend who loves you at all times? Not just through the good ones, but especially through the bad ones. Jesus is that friend. He accepts, shelters, loves, and died for us. Fully knowing the betrayal, brutality, and rejection He would face, Jesus willingly left His glorious throne in heaven to ransom His life. Matthew 26:53 tells us that with one word Jesus could have summoned more than twelve legions of angels for His rescue. Instead He bore our burdens and much more for the sake of our salvation. This sacrificial act of love and friendship demonstrated by Jesus is one which we do not deserve. We fail Him daily. We are selfish, self-centered, and bent on our own needs and wants. Yet despite all of this, God wants a close personal relationship with us. He asks nothing in return, and instead offers us His friendship and gift of eternal life!

July 7th – 1 Chronicles 12:40

1 Chronicles 12:40

God knows the plans He has for us. Wonderful, glorious plans. And just like He did with David, God He will send us helpers to see those plans done. People to strengthen, support, challenge, guide, protect, encourage, and love us. From Jonathon, the son of David’s greatest enemy, to men who would eagerly give their lives for their king, God provided mighty friends to help David fulfill what the Lord intended. And we can rejoice because He’ll do the same for us. Life can be hard, and at times lonely. But God never intends our spiritual walk to be one of solitude. We were created for fellowship with both Him and others. As such, we all need the love and support of godly friends. And if we let Him, God promises to place in our lives the people we need to accomplish the marvelous purpose He has for each of us.

April 8th – Proverbs 17:17

Proverbs 17:17

“What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.” This hymn by Joseph M. Scriven, is one of my absolute favorites. And it’s perfect when celebrating the great gift of salvation we receive from accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord, Savior, and Friend. In Proverbs 17:17 Solomon says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born at a difficult times.” Who doesn’t want a friend like that; one who loves you at all times? Not just through the good ones, but especially through the bad. Jesus is that friend. He accepts, shelters, loves, and died for us. Fully knowing the betrayal, brutality, and rejection He would face, Jesus willingly left His glorious throne in heaven. He came to ransom His life to bring us forgiveness and reconciliation with the Father. What a friend we have in Jesus indeed!
