Guidance

July 23rd – Proverbs 16:1

Proverbs 16:1

The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.

We’ve all heard the expression, “Man plans and God laughs.” But although a funny way to describe the unpredictability of life, it’s hardly the truth. Because nowhere in the Bible does God tells us not to plan ahead. In fact it would be rather foolish to live life by the seat of our pants. And if He didn’t want us to make plans, God wouldn’t have given us the gift of free will to make choices and decisions for ourselves. A free will which allows us to take responsibility for our actions, learn from our experiences, and grow on our spiritual journey. Our Father understands that we each have our own intentions and desires. But for our good, it’s essential to surrender them to the wisdom and will of the Lord. To be open to His guidance, and trust in the path He chooses. For He knows us better than we know ourselves, loves us beyond measure, and wants only the best for our lives. And in Jeremiah 29:11 God gives us His beautiful promise that the wonderful plans He has for us include, “a future and a hope.”

July 10th – Proverbs 4:4

Proverbs 4:4

Then he taught me, and he said to me, ‘Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live.

There’s a reason the Bible is the best selling book of all time. Because in it can found the perfect blueprint for life. Solomon’s father David knew the life saving benefits of believing and following God’s Word. And so he ingrained the need to know and study the Lord’s commandments into his son. Words echoed by Solomon to all who seek wisdom. God’s Word provides much needed guidance, discernment, and direction for every aspect of our lives. Through the stories, parables, and teachings it contains we can find answers to life’s deepest questions, discover the character of God, and learn how to live according to His will. The Bible shows example after example of love, forgiveness, and redemption. Which in turn inspires us to live with compassion, humility, and integrity. More than just a good book, God’s Word is alive, active, and sharper than any double-edged sword. (Heb. 4:12) And if we follow it teachings, will point us to a meaningful and Christlike life.

July 6th – Proverbs 27:1

Proverbs 27:1

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”

I’m a list maker. I love to sit down with a cup of hot coffee and make a list of things I need to do for the day. My lists keep me organized. And I get a small feeling of accomplishment as I cross off each task at its completion. Yet most days the list I start with gets thrown out the window. Because in this world things happen, plans change, and problems occur. No wonder Robert Burns famously said, “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” That’s why Solomon encourages us to approach each day with humility. Recognizing that our plans and aspirations may be subject to change at any moment. Each day we get is a gift from God, and our lives are subject to His will alone. So while we can make plans, we should also be open to God’s redirection and trust in His ultimate purpose for our lives. As Christians we need to make plans with the understanding that God is control of the future. All we need do is remain receptive to His leading and guidance throughout out journey.

April 10th – Hebrews 13:8

Hebrews 13:8

In a constantly changing world, it’s good to know that there is one we can always rely on. One whose character and teachings are consistent across time. And whose message and actions remain relevant and important for all generations. That One is Jesus Christ. The same yesterday, today, and forever, the Lord is our reliable and constant source of hope, guidance, and strength. And as such, we can rely on His teachings, sacrifice, and love, both in this life and in the next. Most wonderful of all, because Jesus never changes, His work on the Cross remains available to all who seek redemption and forgiveness. This means that anyone who calls on Jesus as their Savior can be assured of eternal life. And we can trust that no matter what challenges or difficulties we face in life, Jesus will always be there for us. Because His love and grace will never diminish.

March 14th – Proverbs 16:3

Proverbs 16:3

We all make plans for our lives. Some work out better then we could have hoped, others leave us shaking our heads wondering what in the world we were thinking. But although we can try our best to see that our plans will come to fruition, God always has the final say. And it’s a blessing that He does. Because God knows us better than we know ourselves. And unlike us, can see from the beginning to the end. So instead of going it alone we need to give our plans to God. Praying for Him to guide and give us wisdom to proceed with them. And to accept if His answer is no. For God wants to save us from heartache and pain. So if our way isn’t the right way, He will show us a better way. Our heavenly Father only wants the best for us. So we can lay our plans at His feet. Believing in full faith that if it is His will, God will see it done.

September 18th – Esther 4:14

Esther 4:14

Esther was a young queen in over her head. Told by her cousin Mordecai about the prime minister’s plot to kill the Jews, the fate of her people laid heavy on her small shoulders. Yet Esther knew where to go; straight to God. For three days and nights Esther sheltered in His presence through prayer and fasting. And as she grew closer to the Lord, Esther received the wisdom and courage she needed to save her people. Life is hard. And trying to do it on our own is near impossible. But thankfully, as Christians we never have to face anything alone. Because God is there welcoming us to come to Him. To spend time in His presence, bathing in His strength, mercy, and guidance. A place of refreshment, the arms of the Lord is where we experience His perfect peace. Where we find the answers we seek, the wisdom of God’s counsel, and the warmth of His unconditional love.

August 8th – Deuteronomy 31:8

Deuteronomy 31:8

We live in a constantly changing world. And currently one full of turmoil and division. Change is hard, and for some it  produces anxiety and fear. Israel knew those feelings well. After following their beloved leader Moses for forty years, God dropped the bombshell that the next trek of their journey would be under the guidance of someone new. Yet in that change, God still promised to be by their side through every challenge. A promise He gives to us as well.  No matter the road we walk, whether crooked or straight, God has already cleared the path ahead. And through every trial, He is there holding our hands every step of the way. His love calms our fears, His strength carries us through, and His grace gives us peace, as we walk in Him. We never need fear or give in to discouragement. For the Creator of the universe, Ruler of all, will never leave our side or abandon us, even in the darkest of days.
