Heart Of Flesh

January 11th – Ezekiel 36:26

Ezekiel 36:26

This new year, one of my projects is turning a stony, weedy, patch of my yard into a flower garden where bees and butterflies can thrive. But before anything can grow, some hard work has to be done. Rocks need to be removed, weeds need to be pulled, and the ground needs to be tilled. All done to uncover the rich, nourishing soil beneath. It’s messy, tiring work. And at times it feels easier just to leave the ground the way it is. But without that preparation, nothing healthy will take root.

That’s the way it is when it comes to our hearts. God gently but faithfully works on the hardened places within us. He breaks up what is stubborn, rebellious, and unfruitful. God takes our hearts of stone, and begins to soften them in His hands. The result is a heart moldable and ready to reflect the likeness of Jesus. The work required to create a garden is hard, but the beauty makes every effort worthwhile. In the same way, producing a fruitful harvest for the Lord doesn’t happen without hard, sometimes uncomfortable work. Yet when our hearts are willing to be shaped, softened, and renewed by Him, the beauty that grows from it is truly remarkable.

Reflection Question:
What hardened or weedy areas of your heart might God be inviting you to surrender so He can soften, renew, and bring new life?

Prayer Prompt:
Lord, take my heart and do the work only You can do. Remove what is hard, crowded, or unfruitful, and replace it with a heart that is soft, willing, and alive in You. Shape me so my life produces beauty and fruit that honors You.

May 11th – Ezekiel 11:19

Ezekiel 11:19

I used to be confused by Ezekiel 11:19. I mean I understood why God would remove our hearts of stone. But why would He replace them with hearts of flesh? After all, isn’t the flesh the very thing we fight against? Then I learned that when God speaks of a heart of flesh, He’s referring to a heart that is soft and receptive to His will. One that is eager and willing to obey and follow the Lord. And a heart that loves others with a true, Christlike love. That’s the heart I want. Which is why everyday, I pray for a heart transplant. For God to remove my wicked heart of stone, and replace it with the heart of Jesus. To make me a new creation in Christ, and to give me the power to live a life that glorifies Him. Why? Because I once read that our human hearts were created to mirror the heart of our Creator. And since the attributes of God’s heart include love, mercy, compassion, and justice, those are the attributes I want!

October 23rd – 1 Corinthians 6:19

1 Corinthians 6:19

God’s Promise – “I have given you My Spirit, so your body could be My temple.”

Each one of us is born with a sin nature that would rather practice self indulgence than self discipline. And when the flesh wants something, the hardest word to hear is “no”. But Paul tells us as followers of Christ we have all we need to keep our urges in check. So why is self control so important? Not because Paul is a party pooper. But because he understands the destruction that comes from being slaves to our sinful desires. Desires that if acted upon, put us right back into the bondage that Jesus died to free us from. And even more importantly, Paul reminds us that we have the Holy Spirit of Almighty God dwelling inside of us. So if we truly love the Lord, we should strive to honor Him in all things; including being good caretakers of our bodies. For they are given to us by our Creator to whom they belong. And one day those same bodies will be resurrected and glorified to eternal perfection!

March 12th – Ezekiel 11:19

Ezekiel 11:19

Once we had sinful hearts of stone hardened against God. But when we receive Jesus as our Savior, through the work of the Holy Spirit, our hearts soften in Christlike love for our Heavenly Father. Now our hearts long not for the things of the world, but instead long to see God’s will done in all things. These new hearts are a gift from the Lord, purchased with His precious blood. And out of thankfulness, should be tender, loving, and eager to glorify the Lord. For we place our faith in Christ knowing He alone fills our hearts with a peace nothing else could ever offer!
