Joseph

December 14th – Matthew 1:20

Matthew 1:20

When I think about Joseph, the father of Jesus, I’m reminded how often he’s overlooked in the Christmas story. And how he humbly stood quietly in the background while history was being made. Joseph never sought the spotlight, yet his faith and obedience speak loudly to me. For when fear, confusion, and uncertainty could have ruled his heart, he chose trust instead. He listened to God’s voice in a dream and responded with immediate obedience. Joseph protected Mary when it cost him his reputation. And he stayed when walking away would have been easier. Joseph shows us that righteousness is often lived out in quiet faithfulness, not public recognition. His courage wasn’t loud, but it was strong. And his obedience helped usher the Savior into the world. Joseph reminds fathers that presence matters, and that covering and protecting are holy callings. He teaches all of us that saying yes to God can change generations. Joseph didn’t need applause to be faithful. He simply trusted God and followed. And because of that, the Christmas story was forever changed.

Reflection Question:
Where might God be calling you to quiet faith and obedience, even if your role feels unseen or unrecognized by others?

Prayer Prompt:
Lord, give me a heart like Joseph. One that listens for Your voice and responds with trust and obedience. Help me to be faithful in the quiet places, to choose courage over fear, and to say yes to You even when the path is unclear.

December 6th – Luke 2:7

Luke 2:7

I love the saying that true greatness is not found in majesty, but in the tender embrace of humility. In the quiet humbleness of the manger, we see that the mightiest of miracles often unfolds in the gentlest of places. That’s why Christmas is all about humility. Mary and Joseph found themselves in a humble stable, welcoming the Savior into the world. The King of Kings, born not in a palace,  but in a feeding trough, reflects a profound humility that marks the heart of Christ’s mission. In this modest setting, the Creator of the universe enters humanity with an unparalleled humility. Demonstrating to the world that true greatness lies in selfless service and a willingness to embrace the lowliest of circumstances. The humility of Jesus at Christmas is a powerful reminder that God often reveals Himself in the most unassuming moments. This invites us to approach the festivities with a spirit of humility and gratitude for the love and joy brought forth in the humblest of beginnings.

June 29th – Genesis 50:17

Genesis 50:17

This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’ Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.”

If there’s anyone who had a reason to hold a grudge and exact vengeance, it would be Joseph. Betrayed by his brothers and sold into slavery, Joseph had every right to hold bitterness in his heart against them. Yet Joseph’s response was one of forgiveness and compassion. Because he knew their actions were part of God’s greater plan. That same ability to forgive is within all of us who are rooted in deep faith and trust in God’s plan. Like Joseph, we can chose to see beyond the betrayal and harbor no bitterness in our hearts. Just as Jesus does for us, Joseph displayed empathy, understanding, and compassion. Because he knew all of us are flawed and capable of making mistakes. By extending forgiveness, Joseph embraced the opportunity for reconciliation and restoration, prioritizing love and unity over vengeance. His forgiveness is a testament to his remarkable character. And it serves as an inspiring example of the transformative power of forgiveness in our own lives.

December 18th – Matthew 1:24

Matthew 1:24

When we see the nativity scene, we are reminded of the precious gift of our Savior. But also found in that stable is a reminder of the faithfulness of a man named Joseph. A man who stands in the shadows, but whose obedience to God is a lesson for us all. Obedience is a daily struggle for me. Too often I find it easier to ask forgiveness for my disobedience than to be obedient in the first place. But not Joseph. When he found his fiancé pregnant yet still claiming to be a virgin, Joseph could have turned Mary away. But instead, when an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and commanded him to take Mary as his bride, Joseph obeyed. And as a result he was blessed with the awesome job of caring for God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Oh how awesome is our Father in heaven! When we deserve nothing, He blesses our obedience richly, and gives us everything!

December 10th – Luke 1:30-45

Luke 1:30-45

During the time of Jesus’ birth, the customary age for betrothal was 13 or 14. And Mary was probably around this young age when Joseph asked her to marry him. Think about that! And at her tender age not only did Mary get a proposal, she was also visited by the angel Gabriel. God’s angel came to the young girl to announce that Mary would give birth to the Savior of the world. Now Jewish tradition demanded harsh treatment for unmarried pregnant women. Religious leaders would have dealt with her severely. Yet Mary remained strong in her faith responding, “…may it be done according to your word.” (Luke 26:38. Mary was an ordinary girl with extraordinary faith. A faith tested constantly as she watched her beloved child suffer, and lay down His life for the whole world. A good and faithful servant, she is an model and inspiration to us all.

Matthew 1:18-25

When we see the nativity scene, we are reminded of the precious gift of our Savior. But also found in that stable is a reminder of the faithfulness of a man named Joseph. A man who stands in the shadows, but whose obedience to God is a lesson for us all. Any other man after learning his fiancé was pregnant by another, would have walked away, or wanted her to be punished. But Joseph wanted neither. Instead when visited by an angel of Lord telling Joseph of Mary’s divine conception, he was willing to obey God. No matter the personal cost. For Joseph not only loved God, he loved Mary and the child she was carrying. So in that love and faithfulness, Joseph obeyed God and named the child Jesus. And that act of obedience accomplished two things. First, it gave the Son of God an earthly father. And second, gave Jesus his noble ancestry as a descendent of the house of David, fulfilling the prophecy of God.

Safe In His Hands – Genesis 50

The story of Joseph is a hard one to read. It seemed he couldn’t catch a break. Author A.W. Tozer once said, ‘It is doubtful that God ever used anybody greatly without first hurting him deeply”, and Joseph knew this firsthand. But even through his lowest of lows and highest of highs, Joseph recognized that it was the hand of God working in all things to bring about His will. …

Safe In God’s Hands – Genesis 46-50

Genesis 46-50

The story of Joseph is a hard one to read. It seems he just couldn’t catch a break. Author A.W. Tozer once said, ‘It is doubtful that God ever used anybody greatly without first hurting him deeply”, and Joseph knew this firsthand. But even through his lowest of lows and highest of highs, Joseph knew one thing. That it was the hand of God working in all things to bring about His will.

With all of the trials that he faced, it would have been easy for Joseph to get stuck in self pity and discouragement. He could have turned away from God, blaming Him for his misfortunes. And Joseph could have used his power and authority to take vengeance against his brothers for their brutal betrayal.

But he didn’t. Instead Joseph humbled himself before the Lord and submitted to His will. He held on to the truth that God is always in control. And most of all, Joseph trusted Romans 8:28. “God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

When tough times have come into my life, too often my first response has been anger or to question God and cry out, “Why me?” I have tried to rely on my own abilities to control or change the situation. When instead I should be like Joseph, riding out the storm and content in trusting God’s perfect plans and timing. Pridefully I’ve tried in vain to follow my own path instead of the path God has laid out for me.

During those times when I feel the pull of a “woe is me attitude”, I remember the strength of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He willingly faced endless adversity and endured unmeasurable suffering to fulfill the plans of God. And because of His sacrifice, we are saved.

Although I might not understand God’s reasons for the tribulations in my life, God knows. And that’s enough for me. What I do know is that He loves me, always has my  best interests at heart, and wants me to cast all of my anxiety onto Him. (1Peter 5:7).

At the time of his troubles, Joseph didn’t yet know the great things God was going to accomplish through him. And when we are knee deep in our troubles we might not see the great things God wants to accomplish through us too. No matter the difficulty, even if as in Joseph’s case it’s the wickedness of others, God is there.

I love how the iworship Bible says, “He’s watching. Working. Writing a masterpiece.” And in writing this masterpiece, God may use our suffering to result in not only a great blessing for ourselves, but for others as well. For just as Joseph declares to the brothers who treated him with treachery, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.” (Gen. 50:20)

No matter what you are going through right now, remember that He has a purpose and a plan. God loves you more than you can ever know, so trust Him. He will will keep you safe in His hands, and there are no better hands to be in!
