Proverbs 9:10

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

Author John Bevere wrote, “We cannot truly love God until we fear Him, nor can we properly fear Him until we love Him.” Love seems counterintuitive to fear. Especially when it comes to loving God. After all aren’t we told in 1 John 4:18 that perfect love casts out fear? And there’s no more perfect love than God’s. But far from meaning terror or dread, when the Bible speaks of the fear of the Lord it’s referring to a deep reverence and awe for who God is and all that He does. And a respect for the Ruler and Creator of all things due Him and no other. So fearing the Lord means submitting ourselves to His authority. And in doing so becoming open to receiving divine wisdom. Wisdom that keeps us grounded, humble, and receptive to learning from both the joys and challenges of life. The fear of the Lord encourages us to seek knowledge, insight, and spiritual growth. Which in turn leads to a deeper and wiser understanding of ourselves, others, and the world around us.

Isaiah 28:29

Theologian Albert Barnes once said, “There is nothing more foolish than an act of wickedness; there is no wisdom equal to that of obeying God.” Have you ever said to yourself, “I’m so glad I…!” or, “I wish I didn’t…!” The Bible is filled with story after story of those who made both wise and unwise decisions, and the consequences of their choices. And from them we learn when we first seek the Lord, we save ourselves from a life filled with regret. Because God’s advice is perfect and His wisdom unmatched. And by applying practical principles we can receive His wonderful counsel, and great wisdom. These include surrendering our will to His, meditating on His Word, spending time in prayer, having patience in waiting to hear from Him, and trusting completely in the answer He gives. Gods knows our story from beginning to end. And if we ask Him, will guide us perfectly through every situation!

James 1:5-6

There are many who have knowledge but do they have wisdom? And what’s the difference? Knowledge is information gained through experience, reasoning, or acquaintance. Wisdom is the ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting. Knowledge can exist without wisdom, but not the other way around. One can be knowledgeable without being wise. Christians are called to be wise. And wisdom comes from spending time in God’s Word. James 3:13-18- talks about two kinds of wisdom, godly and earthly. So how can we tell between the two?

Godly wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, and reasonable. It is full of mercy and good fruits. And is unwavering, without hypocrisy. Earthly wisdom is rooted in jealousy and selfish ambition. It is double minded, lead by evil spirits, and loves lies above the truth. And as 1 Corinthians 3:19 tells us, foolishness before God.

So if it’s wisdom you seek, pray and ask God. For He is generous. And to all who ask, He will give abundant wisdom we need to navigate life!

2 Peter 1:3

Is one of your New Year goals to clean up your life and grow in your faith? It’s God plan for us to live a life that glorifies Him and to become more Christlike in our nature. On our own, this can seem like an impossible task. But to each Believer, God gives everything we need to grown in faith, grace, and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (2 Pet. 3:18) So when we truly have a heart of change, God will equip us to make that change happen, and to live a life dedicated to and anchored in Him!
