Isaiah 11:1

We can always count on God to keep His promises. He made a covenant with king David to establish David’s throne forever. But when Israel was conquered by Assyria, that promise seemed all but lost. Yet with the birth of Jesus called in Matthew, the Son of David, we see God’s promise fulfilled. For Christ’s lineage can be traced through the line of Nathan; David’s son, back to David, who is the son of Jesse. Although it took over 1,000 years, Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled and God’s Word proved true with the birth of Messiah Jesus.

Don’t you just love the way God works? The Bible is filled with stories of Him using unremarkable people to do remarkable things. The city of Bethlehem was tiny compared to the great cities of Judah. Yet from this seemingly insignificant city not only came Israel’s king David, but is the birthplace of Messiah Jesus, Ruler of all things. And God wants to do great things through us as well. When we surrender to Him and walk according to His will, He will use us to accomplish tremendous and wonderful deeds!

Could you imagine being in the crowd as Jesus made His triumphant entry into Jerusalem? Oh the excitement and joy that filled the crowd as they watched their promised Messiah riding humbly on a donkey, a symbol of peace, entering the City of David as the as King of the Jews and heir to the throne. As they watched the prophecy of Zechariah fulfilled before their eyes, no wonder they couldn’t help but cry out in jubilation, “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest!” (Matt. 21:9)
