Parables

May 3rd – Mark 13:35-37

Mark 13:35-37

Jesus often taught in parables. And in Mark 13:35-37, Jesus tells of a traveling man who leaves his servants in charge while he’s gone. A story Jesus tells to impart a sacred charge, entrusting His house, authority, and work to us until His glorious return. As stewards of His divine inheritance, we are called to vigilance and diligence, keeping the lamp of faith burning bright. Just as a master entrusts his servants with responsibility, so too has Christ entrusted us with the sacred task of advancing His kingdom. Let us not grow weary or complacent, but instead, let us labor tirelessly in His name, knowing that our efforts bear eternal significance. With each passing moment, let us remain watchful and ready, for the hour of His return is unknown. May we be found faithful and obedient, fulfilling His purposes until the very minute He comes. And when that moment arrives, may we hear the sweet words of our Master saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” as we enter into His eternal joy.

March 26th – Matthew 24:3

Matthew 24:3

The Mount of Olives was a special place in the life of Jesus. It was there He made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where His dear friends Mary, Martha, and Lazarus lived, and where He was betrayed by Judas. So how poignant is it that while Jesus stood on the Mount of Olives, teaching the multitudes about love, mercy, and the Kingdom of God, that He would soon bear the weight of humanity’s sins in that very place. The serene backdrop of the sermon starkly contrasts with the agony Jesus would endure amidst the gnarled olive trees, sweating drops of blood as He faced the impending crucifixion. The same hill that bore witness to His teachings would become a symbol of His ultimate act of love and obedience to the Father. It serves as a beautiful reminder that even in the depths of suffering, there is hope. Because it was on that hill that Jesus willingly surrendered Himself for the salvation of humanity. And through His sacrifice we have the gift of an eternity spent by His side.

October 6th – Mark 4:26-29

Mark 4:26-29

When Jesus walked the earth, He often taught through stories intended to teach a moral about life And in the parable of the growing seed, God’s abundance in the growth and fruitfulness of His kingdom is highlighted. Just as a seed sown in the ground grows and produces a harvest many times its size, so it is with the Word of God. When planted in hearts receptive to it, God’s Word can yield an abundant spiritual harvest. So we can trust in God’s timing and wisdom instead of our own. And recognize that growth in our faith and of God’s kingdom often occurs little by little. This teaches us to cultivate patience and persistence in our spiritual journey. And to fully believe that God is at work even when we don’t see immediate results. In times of doubt, Jesus encourages us to faithfully sow the seeds of God’s Word through our actions and our testimony. Doing so because we know that God’s abundance will manifest in due time, both in our own lives and in the lives of those we influence.

January 14th – Luke 16:13

Luke 16:13

Jesus often taught earthly stories with heavenly meanings, called parables. And usually the stories He told were clear in meaning. But the parable of the “Unjust Steward” upon first glance appears to find the Lord commending a crook. For in it we find Jesus seemingly condoning the dishonesty of an unrighteous manger. Yet in truth, Jesus uses the story to teach the importance of caring about our futures, and to warn against the worship of wealth above God. Each of us are God’s stewards. And the wealth He blesses us with, whether it be in the form of money, the ability to teach, a tender heart, or a giving spirit, He expects us to be faithful in managing for the glory of His kingdom. To be just stewards, joyfully and faithfully continuing to go about the Master’s business. And as we do remembering, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” (Col. 3:23-24)
