Philippians 3:13

Regret can be incredibly powerful. It can keep us trapped in the past, replaying our mistakes and reminding us of the things we wish we could change. And if we aren’t careful, regret can become a prison that keeps us from moving forward into the glorious future God has prepared for us.

The apostle Paul understood this well. Before he became one of the greatest messengers of the gospel, he was Saul of Tarsus. A man who ferociously persecuted Christians and was responsible for their suffering and death. He had every reason to look back with regret and shame. Yet Paul learned that he could not change the past, and he refused to allow it to define his future.

Instead, he chose to forget what was behind and press forward toward what lay ahead. If God could forgive, redeem, and use Paul despite his past, He can do the same for us. Our mistakes may be part of our story, but they do not have to be the ending.

We cannot move forward while constantly looking behind us. So release the regret, receive God’s forgiveness, and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. The past is behind you, but your future is still in God’s hands. And He can do far more with your life than you ever imagined.

2 Corinthians 5:17

No matter who we are, we all have things in our past we wish we could change. Words we wish we hadn’t spoken. Choices we wish we hadn’t made. Opportunities we missed. Wounds we’ve caused and wounds we’ve carried. Regret has a way of convincing us that our past will always define our future.

But that isn’t what Jesus says. One of the most beautiful truths of the Gospel is that through confession, repentance, and faith in Christ, we are forgiven. Not partially forgiven. Not reluctantly forgiven. Completely forgiven. The moment we place our trust in Jesus, we become a new creation. Our sins are washed away, our record is cleared, and we are given a fresh start.

I once heard someone say there’s a reason the windshield in a car is so much larger than the rearview mirror. Meaning that while it’s important to glance back occasionally, you can’t safely move forward if you’re constantly staring behind you. The same is true in our walk with God. He doesn’t want us living in the rearview mirror of guilt, shame, and regret. He wants us looking ahead to the hope, purpose, and future He has prepared for those who love Him.

That doesn’t mean we ignore the lessons of the past. It means we stop allowing the past to hold us captive. If God has forgiven us, we don’t need to keep condemning ourselves for what He has already removed.

Today, if old regrets are trying to steal your joy, remember this: your past may be part of your story, but it is not your identity. In Christ, you are forgiven, redeemed, and made new.

Ecclesiastes 7:10

It’s easy to find our hearts drifting backward. We replay what once was and wondering why things aren’t the way they used to be. Ecclesiastes 7:10 gently cautions us against living there. Because when we dwell too long in the past, we miss what God is doing right in front of us. There are memories we cherish, but there are also moments, seasons, and hurts that quietly keep us anchored behind. Holding on can feel safe, familiar, even comforting. Yet, it often keeps us from moving forward in faith. Releasing the past to the Lord doesn’t mean forgetting it or pretending it didn’t matter. Instead it means trusting God with it. It means placing what was into His hands so our hearts are free to receive what is. When we loosen our grip on yesterday, we make room for God to work in today. And that’s where healing, growth, and hope begin. Sometimes the bravest prayer we can pray is simply, “Lord, help me let go.” And in that surrender, He gently leads us forward, one faithful step at a time.

Prayer Prompt:
Lord, You see the places in my heart that keep drifting backward. Help me release the past, both the joys and the wounds, into Your loving hands. Teach me to trust You with what was, so I can walk faithfully in what is. Free my heart to live present, hopeful, and open to Your work today. Amen.

Psalm 77:11

Being part of a prayer group has taught me the beauty of remembering. Many of us keep prayer journals. Not just to write down our prayer requests, but to look back and see the many ways God has faithfully answered them. Psalm 77:11 reminds us how important it is to remember the works of the Lord. And especially when our hearts need reassurance. As we step into a new year, it’s easy to focus only on what lies ahead and forget how faithful God was in the year behind. Yet when we pause and look back, we see prayers that were once whispered now answered. We see blessings we never deserved. And an unconditional love that never wavered. Looking back, we remember moments when God showed up in quiet ways. And still others when His hand was unmistakable. These memories become anchors for our faith. They remind us that God has been with us every step of the way. So as we look to the year ahead, we can move forward with confidence. Because the same faithful God who carried us through last year is the same faithful God walking with us into this one.

As you look back on the past year, where can you clearly see God’s faithfulness through answered prayers, blessings, or moments of His presence?

Titus 3:3

We all have a past, don’t we? Seasons where we wandered, made choices we regret, or chased things that left us empty. Titus 3:3 reminds us that we were once foolish, disobedient, and deceived. But that’s not where our story ends. God, in His endless mercy, stepped into our mess with grace that rewrites everything. He didn’t wait for us to have it all together, He loved us right there in our brokenness. It’s humbling to look back and see how patient God’s been, and how His love has gently transformed our hearts. We are no longer who we were, because His kindness has changed us from the inside out. Every scar now tells a story of redemption. Every failure is a reminder of His forgiveness. So when we see others struggling, may we extend the same compassion that was given to us. Because grace isn’t something to hoard, it’s something to pour out. And that’s the beauty of our testimony. We are living proof that God’s mercy still saves, still restores, and still makes all things new.
