Proverbs 16:1

“The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.”

We’ve all heard the expression, “Man plans and God laughs.” But although a funny way to describe the unpredictability of life, it’s hardly the truth. Because nowhere in the Bible does God tells us not to plan ahead. In fact it would be rather foolish to live life by the seat of our pants. And if He didn’t want us to make plans, God wouldn’t have given us the gift of free will to make choices and decisions for ourselves. A free will which allows us to take responsibility for our actions, learn from our experiences, and grow on our spiritual journey. Our Father understands that we each have our own intentions and desires. But for our good, it’s essential to surrender them to the wisdom and will of the Lord. To be open to His guidance, and trust in the path He chooses. For He knows us better than we know ourselves, loves us beyond measure, and wants only the best for our lives. And in Jeremiah 29:11 God gives us His beautiful promise that the wonderful plans He has for us include, “a future and a hope.”

Proverbs 16:3

We all make plans for our lives. Some work out better then we could have hoped, others leave us shaking our heads wondering what in the world we were thinking. But although we can try our best to see that our plans will come to fruition, God always has the final say. And it’s a blessing that He does. Because God knows us better than we know ourselves. And unlike us, can see from the beginning to the end. So instead of going it alone we need to give our plans to God. Praying for Him to guide and give us wisdom to proceed with them. And to accept if His answer is no. For God wants to save us from heartache and pain. So if our way isn’t the right way, He will show us a better way. Our heavenly Father only wants the best for us. So we can lay our plans at His feet. Believing in full faith that if it is His will, God will see it done.

Proverbs 16 

I’m a list maker. I love to sit down with a cup of hot coffee and make a list of things I need to do for the day. My lists keep me organized, and I get a small feeling of accomplishment as I cross off each task. One Friday night I sat down with my trusted pad of paper and pen, and eagerly wrote down all of the things I planned to get done over the weekend. And as I went to sleep that night with the thoughts of all I wanted to tackle, I awoke to a son with a migraine, a dog having stomach issues, an unexpected early morning visitor, and a complete change in the plans I had so carefully laid out.
