Psalm 25:20

“Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me! Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.”

We live in an era where online accusations and public shaming have become the norm. Social media and the internet have made it easy for people to make allegations against others, often without any proof. And the weight of defending yourself against baseless accusations can be overwhelming. It can cause a fear of being misunderstood or unfairly judged. And become mentally and emotionally draining. But as Christians, we not only have a great Protector, but also a great Defender in God. As we place our trust in Him, He takes it upon Himself to safeguard our reputation. And with His power, shields us from shame or unjust accusations. In a world where our character and honor can be tested and challenged, God’s love, grace, and mercy offers peace and reassurance. This encourages us to live with integrity. And to rely on God’s divine intervention to uphold our honor. For He is our ultimate Advocate. This ensures that our good name remains untarnished, even in the face of adversity or false accusations.

Psalm 92:14

In a world that searches endlessly for the fountain of youth, God assures us His blessings aren’t reserved for the young. As long as we continue to walk with the Lord and seek His will, no matter our age we can bear fruit and be effective workers in His kingdom.  Because even if we aren’t physically able to serve the Lord, we can be examples to others by bearing the fruit of, “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (Gal. 5:22). Bodies grow old and frail, but no physical infirmity can stop the Spirit of God from working in and through us. And those who walk in righteousness, God promises will “flourish like the palm tree“, “grow like a cedar in Lebanon“, and the most wonderful of all, be “planted in the house of the Lord.” There we will “flourish in the courts of our God“, and be “full of sap and very green“.

Psalm 1

We all want to be blessed by God. God wants that too. But that can’t happen if we’re rooted in the wickedness of the world, being fed by the sins of the flesh, and producing worthless, worldly fruit. The way we live our lives, not the words we speak, are the true testimonies of our hearts. And every eye is watching; especially God’s. So to receive His very best, we need to be after God’s own heart. This means uprooting ourselves from the sinful soil of this earth, being replanted on the riverbank of God’s living water. There we can be nourished day and night with His goodness and love. Our leaves will forever be lush and beautiful. And never will our tree be barren, but always produce sweet, bountiful fruit pleasing to the Lord. God warns us that walking beside the wrong crowd leads to standing with them, sitting with them, and finally taking on their lifestyle. Psalm 11:1

Relationships take work. Whether it’s our relationship with God or others, they need a foundation of trust, honesty, love, and repentance to stand strong. Satan is in the business of tearing down, not building up. And he loves nothing more than to form cracks in those foundations through harsh words, misunderstandings, and unforgiving spirits. So when we flee from our problems instead of dealing with them head on, it opens the door for the Enemy to do his worst. When Nehemiah was facing an assignation threat, his friends advised him to hide out in the temple. But he replied, “Should a man like me flee?” (Neh. 6:11) Nehemiah understood that as believers we should always face every problem head on. Standing firm in the faith that the Lord will uphold the righteous. And believing He will give us the power to confront each one in courage and wisdom!

Psalm 29:11

God’s Promise – “I will give you My strength and bless you with My peace.”

In todays climate everyone is over stressed, anxiety filled, and fearful for the future. That’s why we could all use a heaping dose of strength and peace. Life is difficult enough without trying to navigate it alone. My heart aches for those who do not know Christ as their Savior. For they have only themselves to rely on. Only themselves to turn to for comfort, guidance, and security. But thankfully as Christians, we can take refuge in the Lord. For He will never forsake nor disappoint us. Instead the Lord takes our weakness, and gives us His strength. A strength that can overcome any storm and win every battle. And the peace He offers, supersedes even the greatest deluge. For He is our eye in the hurricane. And when we stay centered in the Lord, no lightening bolt, thunder clap, or howling wind, can shake the perfect peace found in the Lord alone!

Psalm 34:7

God’s Promise – “My angels will surround all who fear Me.”

From His unfailing love, God never leaves us to fend off the attacks from the Enemy on our own. That’s why He dispatches ministering angels to protect His children who trust in His name. But even greater still, we have Jesus Christ encamped around us. Our great Shepherd, He’s a watchman who never sleeps, and is always there guarding, protecting, and rescuing His flock. For God promises that the eyes of the Lord are toward those who fear Him and His ears are open to their cry. He will deliver His people from their troubles, and “redeem the soul of His servants.” So let the wolves howl and the storms rage. Because as He did for His people of Israel, the Angel of the Lord has set up camp with His sheep. He goes before us as a barrier between the righteous and the evil. No wickedness can penetrate His fortress and no enemy can sneak past His watchful eyes!

Psalm 91:4

God’s Promises – “I will cover you with My feathers and protect you with My wings.”

We all need a refuge. But sadly, in times of trouble, some seek comfort through alcohol, drugs, food, relationships, or money. But these worldly sanctuaries are nothing more than paper houses that crumble at the first sign of an approaching storm. Yet those who take shelter in Jesus, have an unshakable refuge which can withstand even the greatest typhoon. Isaiah 40:31 compares God’s loving care to that of an eagle. Mighty warriors who protect their young, eagles carry their eaglets away from danger. They fly high above the clouds where the sun shines and no storm rages. Just like that eagle, God carries us on His wings providing all we need to soar through even the toughest of times. And from His unending faithfulness, when we abide in God, we are completely protected under His shelter of strength, love, and grace. And I can think of no safer place to be!

Isaiah 49:15

God’s Promise – “Even if your mother forgets you, I will never forget you.”

It is often said there no greater love than the love a mother feels for her child. Yet as Christians we know there is a greater love still, the love God has for everyone He calls His own. Because even though some are blessed with wonderful parents, others aren’t so lucky. And still others have no parents at all. And that’s why God’s love is so great it surpasses even a mother’s love. A love that calms every fear, nurses every hurt, and provides for our every need. Earthly parents are fallible. But not our Heavenly Father. When others reject us, He will not. When our own family forgets us, God never will. Psalm 27:10 reminds us, “Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.” For He has engraved us on the palms of His hands. And those who receive Jesus as their Savior will be forever loved by our Abba, Father. And if we have His love, we need no other!

Psalm 31:9

Throughout the ages people have asked how a loving God could allow suffering in the world. And in the depths of my despair I too have asked that same question. How could my Father let me, His child, become broken, in pain, and filled with sorrow? But time, hindsight, and prayer have taught me that instead of asking why, I simply need to trust. Trust that no matter the suffering I endure, God always has a purpose for my pain. As long as there is sin, there will be suffering. And whether or not we know the reason behind God letting it in our lives, of this we can be certain. He will never make us suffer alone. For, “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart” (Ps. 34:18) Not a single tear we cry goes unnoticed by our Father in heaven, who collects each and every one in His bottle. (Ps. 56:8) And if we let Him, He will be there each step of the way. Lovingly God will see us through the pain, ready, willing, and able to fill our aching hearts with peace and gladness.

Psalm 3:3

In 1927 a submarine of the Navy was accidentally rammed by a Coast Guard destroyer, and quickly sunk. Heroic efforts were made to rescue six known trapped survivors. They exchanged a series of signals with the rescue force, by tapping on the hull.  As the trapped men used the last of available oxygen in the sub, they sent a morse-coded message. “Is there any hope?” That’s a question king David must have asked as well. His son Absalom was attempting to seize his throne. Forced to leave Jerusalem and flee across the Jordan river, David didn’t know friend from foe. But He did know the goodness of God. David saw firsthand the awesome might and strength of God and how He cares about the troubles of those who love Him. God fought for David, and Absalom’s armies were swept from the field. And as God was David’s mighty Shield, so He will be for us. So when the question is asked, “Is there any hope?” we as Christians can give a resounding yes!  Through faith and the glory of God, though evil surrounds us, it won’t prevail!
