Psalm 24:7

In Psalm 24, David makes a plea to Jerusalem to make room for the King of glory to enter the city. Who is the King of glory? To the priests the King of Glory is the Lord Almighty.  To the the people the King of glory is Jesus. Both are right, for Jesus is the Lord Almighty and the King of glory. Christ is the One with “clean hands and a pure heart.” Jesus is our Lord and Savior who triumphed over death through His resurrection. And now He reigns in glory at the right hand of the Father making daily intercessions on our behalf. Our Lord stands waiting for the gates of our hearts to be “lifted up” letting the King of glory in. One who longs to fill our hearts with peace, and to give rest to our weary souls. Won’t you open the gates to your heart and life and receive the perfect love and peace that only Jesus can offer?

Psalm 55:22

There’s nothing more painful than being betrayed by someone you hold dear. King David knew this well. Betrayed by one of his dearest friends, his heart was broken and his soul weary. David faced threats from all sides, enemies constantly wanting his destruction, and not knowing who would turn on him next. Too much for any one man to deal with on his own. No wonder he cried out in deep despair. But because the One he cried out to was the Lord, David found the strength to overcome every painful circumstance. To cast our cares on God means laying at His feet every problem, hurt, and disappointment. To trust in His promises and provisions, and letting Him fight our fight. No matter what this world throws at us we needn’t worry nor fear. Because God promises to never let the righteous be shaken!

Psalm 15

Who may live with almighty God in heaven? If the list of requirements in Psalm 15 sound impossible, it’s supposed to be. Because the truth is, we can’t realize our need for Jesus until we understand how impossible it is for us to achieve God’s holiness. Romans 3:23 reminds us, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”.  We are all guilty. And everyone of us needs a Redeemer. This is why we must depend on Jesus. Because He is the One who can save, cleanse, and prepare us to dwell in His tent forever. In all the world, the Lord alone walked in perfect righteousness. And when we abide in Him and His power, we too can walk the path of righteousness. Never will we be shaken! And one glorious day, we will dwell with the Lord forever on God’s holy hill!

Psalm 8:1

Did you know that psalm 8 was the first Biblical text to reach the moon? It traveled into space on Apollo 11 on a disc that had messages from seventy-three countries. It was included in a text submitted by the Vatican. The disc now rests in an aluminum case on the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility. Psalm 8 is a beautiful expression of worship to God. And a wonderful description of the power of His majestic work in creation. Everything about God is magnificent, praiseworthy, and perfect. And in comparison we are but a speck in this vastness of the cosmos. Yet the Creator of the universe places His love and unwavering attention on us. His love so great, God gave us dominion over all of His creation, and sent His only Son to redeem us!

Psalm 141:1-2

The alter of incense inside God’s holy temple was where Aaron was commanded to offer sweet fragrances to the Lord. Every morning and evening, he burned the sacrifice according to God’s specific instructions. And the pleasing aromas were a powerful reminder to the people; a reminder to pray. For the sweet smoke that rose to the heavens was seen as carrying the prayers of God’s people to His ever listening ears. To our loving Father all prayers of His children are precious, and He always responds to their cries. David knew this well. And so continuously he lifted up his arms and offered God prayers for deliverance and of praise. And we should do the same. Each day we need to be offering the sweet smell of our prayers to God. Laying our petitions on His alter, and letting them be carried to the One who longs to hear them.

Psalm 139

There is no one who knows you better than God. As our Creator and Father, He has perfect knowledge of every aspect about us. From the number of hairs on our head, to every thought, sin, and word we speak. He knows our dreams, hopes, and fears. And as such, He is the perfect One to go to when searching our hearts. David loved God deeply. So he turned to the Lord asking Him to show David any way in which God was displeased with him. We should do the same. Because if we want to grow closer to God, we need to rid our lives of anything that keeps us distanced from Him. So ask God to search your heart and mind. Pray to be open to any areas in your life that need work. And out of His great love, God will lovingly guide, instruct, and lead us on a closer path to Him.

Psalm 23:2-3

The duties of a shepherd involve more that just the physical care of the sheep. Living among the flock, the shepherd is everything to it; guide, physician, protector, and pastor. David, a former shepherd himself, knew how to care for his sheep because he personally experienced the loving care of his heavenly Shepherd, God. And the same loving care God gave to David, He gives to us as well. His blessings redeem the days of our affliction, fears, insecurities, etc. And when we look back over our past, we see how His precious love covered and healed the painful experiences. For as Psalm 30:5 reminds us,  “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning”. Our heavenly Shepherd quenches our thirst from the cool, still waters of His Holy Spirit! And by these blessings to which our Father leads us, we will find our souls restored; our whole being invigorated, and our spiritual life reborn.

Psalm 27:3

With the days growing darker and the enemies of Christians closing in on all sides, how can we not fear? King David felt that same type of fear. In the over 20 years after being anointed to actually taking the throne, he too faced enemies from every side. Yet with confidence David declared, “Whom shall I fear?” How could David be so fearless? Because he knew that neither his own strength, nor his cleverness could save him. No the king of Israel knew his deliverance would only come from the Lord. And David trusted that as he followed in obedience, the Lord would defend him at every turn. For David knew the love God had for him, and put his security in that love. God also loves us with the same intensity. And we can rest securely in the knowledge that God’s love will protect us no matter what. So we too can boldly say, “Though my enemies surround me, my heart will not fear!”

Psalm 5:11

Have you ever been in an emergency situation and needed a place of refuge? I have. The year was 1995. My husband was 230 miles away being cared for by his parents as he recovered from a plane crash. I was in Pensacola, Fl working and caring for our 20 month old daughter. That morning I awoke to a strong hurricane which had suddenly turned in the night and was heading directly for our coastline. I picked up my mom, packed a few things, and headed to where my husband was.

Eight hours later we were only 40 miles north of Pensacola. Traffic accidents had bogged down all the major roadways. And the radio kept reporting it wasn’t safe to stay in your car. We were tired, hungry and it would be getting dark soon. We needed a rescuer and a place of refuge. I prayed for God’s intervention.

How relieved I was to see a police car on the side of the road. I stopped and asked for help. The officer gave me directions to a high school that had been turned into a shelter. I was beyond grateful, for never would I have found this place on my own. There we were able to get a warm meal, stretch our legs, contact my worried husband and watch coverage of the storm on TV. God watched over us that day and night, providing who and what we needed. And oh, how my heart rejoiced! 

A refuge is a place that provides shelter or protection, or something to which one has recourse in difficulty. The Scriptures tell us that God is our refuge place. But, we have to seek His refuge. We can’t stay exposed and vulnerable spiritually, trying to make it on our own.

To make God our refuge means we seek Him and have connection with Him, That way He can guide and provide spiritual resources for us.  The Lord delights in both helping us and our dependence upon Him. Are you depending on God to be your place of refuge? Are you staying connected to your spiritual lifeline? If not, make a point to intentionally seek Him in some way and make this a daily connection. It could be through prayer, Bible study, fellowship with other Christians.

Psalm 112:7

One of the most dreaded phrases to hear is, “I have good news and bad news. Which do you want to hear first?” When someone says that to us our first reaction is to panic. Because even though there is good, the bad is what we focus on. However for Christians, no matter what we hear, we needn’t be fearful. And instead of being reactive, we can be proactive. How? By trusting in the Lord. Because those whose hearts remain fixed on the truth of God can never be shaken. And no darkness of fear, dread, panic, or despair can extinguish the light of God’s promise. A promise to see us through any situation, good or bad. A promise that the great I Am is in control of all things. And He will never let us face anything alone. So no matter how bad the evil tidings, our heart can still rejoice. For our confidence is found in the Lord alone. And in the Good News He brings to all.
