1 Peter 3:9

When someone hurts us, our natural instinct is to retaliate. To inflict pain in return for the pain we’ve received. This urge for retribution feels justifiable and satisfying in the moment, but it can lead to a spirit of hostility and bitterness. That’s why God calls us to a higher standard, one that reflects His grace. Instead of repaying evil with evil, we are to respond with goodness, forgiveness, and blessing. But such obedience is impossible on our own. Because it requires a strength and grace that is beyond what we can do in the flesh. Yet with God, all things are possible. His Spirit empowers us to break the cycle of revenge. To choose compassion over cruelty, and to offer kindness where it is least expected. This divine empowerment allows us to transform potential conflicts into opportunities for peace and reconciliation. By repaying evil with goodness, we not only reflect God’s character but also open ourselves to the blessings He promises. Fostering healing and harmony in our relationships and lives.

Ephesians 4:32

“Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”

Throughout the Bible we are commanded to forgive one another. But what does true forgiveness look like? Forgiving others requires introspection and self-reflection. It means extending our forgiveness unconditionally, without holding onto grudges or seeking retribution. True forgiveness involves releasing the offender from our judgments and choosing to treat them with grace and compassion. And a great measure of that is if we genuinely desire their well-being and growth. Even if they have not sought our forgiveness or changed their behavior. Moreover, true forgiveness is letting go of resentment and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable again, opening the door to reconciliation and restoration. It involves offering the gift of forgiveness freely, without requiring the offender to earn it. When we forgive as God forgives, we emulate His boundless love, mercy, and willingness to reconcile with us despite our own shortcomings.

Proverbs 11:17

There’s no way around it. It hurts when someone mistreats us. Yet while the world tells us to hurt them back, God tells us, “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matt. 5:44) Not an easy task on our own. But when our strength comes from God, there’s no limit to what we can do. For He is our Rock, Fortress, and Deliverer. And His grace will prevent us from saying or doing things that we will later regret. Such as wronging others, ruining relationships, and harming our own hearts. We serve a loving God who gives all who love Him unmerited mercy and forgiveness through His Son Jesus Christ. And He wants us to do the same. Not only for the benefit for others, but also for ourselves. Because revenge and retribution makes our hearts grow hard and bitter. And keeps us from experiencing God’s very best for our lives.

January 7th – Psalm 41:12

Psalm 41:12

There is a quote that warns, “not everyone you fight is your enemy. And not everyone who helps you is your friend.” Throughout our lives we will experience hurt, betrayal, and disappointment at the hands of others. And in those moments we have a choice to make. Will that pain make us better or bitter? Better is using the hurt to grow closer to the Lord, and softening our hearts to the pain and needs of others. But bitter takes glee in retribution and seeing others misfortune. And it turns a blind eye to the suffering of another because its focus is only on self pity. We all fall short and sin daily against God. Yet from His wonderful love, He extends to us His unmerited grace and mercy. And He calls us to show that same grace and mercy. To repay evil with kindness, curses with blessings, and mistreatment with prayer. (Luke 6:27-28) And most importantly of all, if we see a need to meet that need. The way God meets all of ours.
