Running A Race

December 7th – Hebrews 12:1-2

Hebrews 12:1-2

Did you know that the wise men who came to see the Christ child probably traveled 800-900 miles to see Him? Not an easy task. For the journey took preparation, provisions, and a commitment of weeks, months, and maybe even years. Yet to find the Lord was the race set before them. A race they ran in joyful anticipation of looking upon the face of God. We too are called to the same race. A race of endurance, patience, and faith. One that requires us to lay down worldly living, and run whole heartedly for the Lord. It won’t be easy, and it won’t be a sprint. But when we remember all Jesus endured for us, it makes the race not just bearable, but joyful. For the Lord suffered pain, sorrow, betrayal, and rejection. All for the joy of seeing us restored to the Father and giving us the greatest gift of all, eternity spent at His side. And how can we not rejoice for that?

Hebrews 12:2

Life is hard, and some days it can feel like we’re at the end of our ropes. The stresses and pull of the world make the race set before us difficult. But if there is any one who understands hardship, it’s Jesus. Out of His great love, He left His glorious throne in heaven to suffer at the Cross. There isn’t a trouble we have that Jesus doesn’t understand. So when we feel weak, and we can’t run another step, we can look to Him. For Christ already perfectly finished the race. And He is our endless supply of not only guidance, but our greatest source of strength.

Philippians 3:13

The Christian life has often been referred to running a race with the goal of becoming perfect reflections of Jesus. And  the great apostle Paul knew the importance of pressing on and the difficulty of reaching the finish line. For along the way we have setbacks, and feel the pull of fleshly living. But no matter the circumstances we face, we need to keep striving forward. For our reward is far greater than anything we could ever face in this world. The trophy we receive is not only seeing our Savior face to face, but spending an eternity by His side!
