Solomon

July 19th – Proverbs 21:9

Proverbs 21:9

It is better to live in a corner of the roof than in a house shared with a contentious woman

I remember watching an episode of Dr. Phil where a couple were arguing back and forth. Finally after hearing a laundry list of complaints from the wife, Dr. Phil looked at her and asked, “Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?” Throughout Proverbs Solomon warns about women he calls contentious or quarrelsome. And when we read what he says, we as women may feel a bit indignant. After all what’s wrong with being a women with an opinion and not afraid to defend it? But it’s important to know that never does Solomon say that women should be seen and not heard. That we shouldn’t speak our minds, or share our feelings. His point is this. Often times the problem doesn’t lie in the message, but rather the delivery. For nothing makes people shut down faster than approaching them in an argumentative, contentious, or quarrelsome way. Instead we should seek ways to resolve conflicts peacefully and respectfully. Gently and lovingly fostering an environment of understanding and compromise.

Proverbs 18:21

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

We’ve all heard the old familiar saying, sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me. And we all know that isn’t true. Words hurt. And can wound deeper and longer than any physical injury. When used recklessly or maliciously, our words can damage, diminish, and scar others, leaving lasting effects. That’s why we have a great responsibility in choosing our words wisely. If we use our words to spread love, kindness, and positivity, we’ll experience the fruits of those words in our own lives. We’ll have healthy, good relationships, attracting similar positivity and goodwill from others. But if we use our tongue to spread negativity, gossip, or hurtful remarks, we will reap the consequences of those words as well. We may face strained relationships, misunderstandings, and a toxic atmosphere of negativity. So as followers of Jesus, let’s strive to use our words to uplift, encourage, and inspire. Because the power we hold in our tongues can shape the world around us, for good or bad.

Better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife.”

In today’s thirsty society, bigger, better, and more is celebrated. And we are encouraged to chase after material wealth with the promise that possessions and abundance will bring us happiness. Yet Solomon had all the fame, power, and things money could buy. And even he understood the importance of contentment and peace. And no fancy meal, designer clothes, or social media following can replace the treasure of a home filled with harmony and love. Proverbs 17:24

Wisdom is before him who has understanding, but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.”

One of the Hebrew words used to describe foolishness is “nabal.” It means someone who has lost spiritual perception, the one always searching for something. In our fast-paced and consumer-driven society, everywhere we turn we are we enticed by the newest trends, technologies, and experiences. No wonder we are always looking for the latest and greatest. But Solomon warns us about the dangers of constantly chasing after the next best thing. Because the pursuit of instant gratification and the constant need to keep up with the Jones can leave us feeling empty and unsatisfied. Instead of being driven by the fleeting desires of the moment, we should focus on developing a deeper understanding of ourselves and our values. By doing so, we can make more meaningful choices and find contentment in the present. Rather than constantly chasing after the next shiny object. By focusing on what truly matters, we can make wiser choices, set meaningful goals, and lead a purposeful life.

July 5th – Proverbs 13:3

Proverbs 13:3

Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.

Social media has become a powerful platform. People around the world can share opinions, thoughts, and ideas instantly. But there are those who use the the internet as a means to express divisive opinions and engage in heated debates. These “keyboard warriors,” couldn’t care less about the consequences of their words, or the hurt they cause. That’s why Christians should heed the warning of Solomon to exercise caution and wisdom in our speech. Because when we succumb to the temptation of acting like the world, being aggressive, rude, or purposely hurtful online, we risk tarnishing our witness and hinder spreading the Gospel. The world is watching, so it’s crucial for believers to remember that our words and behavior carry weight. And they have the potential to either draw people closer to God or drive them further away. Thats why even the words we type should be peppered with discernment, grace, and a genuine desire to build bridges rather than win arguments.

Proverbs 3:3

June 13th – 1 Kings 8:34

1 Kings 8:34

then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land you gave to their ancestors.”

Many times Israel sinned against God. And just as many times God forgave them. Many too are the sins of our country. Like Israel we have disobeyed God, embraced wickedness, and turned aside from the Lord. Yet thankfully, God’s forgiveness is not limited to only the nation of Israel. It’s available to any country that humbly turns to Him, acknowledges its wrongdoings, and seeks His mercy. And our country is in desperate need of repentance and forgiveness. During the dedication of the temple, King Solomon prayed for God’s mercy and forgiveness for the people of Israel when they sinned against Him. We too need to be interceding for our country. Praying our leaders make decisions based on God’s will. That her people will repent from evil, and that God will not remove His hand of blessing from us. Asking God to forgive our transgressions and guide the nation towards righteousness, unity, and peace.
