Romans 7:18

Christian author, Lysa TerKeurst once wrote, “You are more than the sum total of your feelings and perfectly capable of that little gift from Jesus called self-control.” Being a Christian means no more excuses for sin or being satisfied with merely the desire to do better. And no more saying, “I can’t help it, the temptation is too great.” Jesus faced every temptation we ever will. And the same power He had to walk in righteousness is available to us. Satan knows our weakness. And He takes great glee in dangling the carrot of sin before us. But God has always been one step ahead. He knew left to our own devices, we’ll choose sin every time. That’s why in His great love and mercy, He provided a way out. When we receive Christ as our Savior, the Holy Spirit indwells us. And through Him we have the strength to triumph over sin, win every battle, and overcome any temptation. So claim the power that is yours, and never again fear the enticement of the Enemy!

2 Corinthians 10:4

The Bible describes a stronghold as a belief which is strongly defended or upheld. They are formed from the lies and deception of the Enemy. And one such stronghold is self importance. Everybody wants to be seen, known, and loved. And we live in a world that values self importance. But as Solomon so famously cautioned, pride goes before a fall. Look at Satan. Because he wanted to be like God he rebelled against his Creator. And it was ego that he used to cause Adam and Eve to fall, tempting them with the thought of being more like God. Throughout the Bible, we are warned against the love of self. For God is the only One who deserves our worship. And if we let Him, through His power we can break down all wrong thinking and sinful barriers.

Matthew 26:41

Jesus, in the Garden of Gethsemane, knew that he was facing the biggest spiritual battle of a lifetime. He also knew that his disciples would be facing great spiritual battles too. They would be afraid and feel alone as their leader was taken from their presence and imprisoned. Jesus knew that even though they loved him and said they would never deny or forsake Him, in their own strength, they would fail to carry through. He knew their weaknesses and the cunning power of the enemy and that’s why he strongly encouraged them to pray.

Prayer is how we engage in spiritual warfare. Temptation is a tool of the devil. One he used in the Garden of Eden to lure Eve and then Adam into sinful desires and disobedience to God. We all will face temptations. But God’s Word tells us that there’s no temptation He hasn’t encountered. And certainly no temptation He can’t help us overcome. In His time of deepest sorrow, Jesus had mankind on his mind. One of the most beautiful things about God taking on human flesh to dwell among man is that He can relate to all of our struggles and hardships. Jesus provided reconciliation for us to God and He actively intercedes for us.  What a privilege to know we have access to the throne of God for our petitions and prayers.

Matthew 4:1

Temptation is everywhere. And I don’t know about you, but more than not, in my fleshly weakness I fall to those temptations. Then it becomes a vicious cycle. I sin, regret it, pray for forgiveness, feel bad for giving in to the temptation, and to numb the pain of failing, I sin again. But thankfully, God’s forgiveness is unending, and His patience inexhaustible. Because He too faced temptation. The Lord knows the struggle of fighting the Tempter, a relentless enemy who longs for our destruction. Yet in the desert facing down Satan, Jesus was victorious. With each temptation the Lord fought back with the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Eph. 6:17) A mighty weapon available to each of us, and one that stops evil in its tracks. So when temptation rears it’s ugly head, I can rejoice knowing that God won’t let me be tempted beyond what I can bear. (1 Cor. 10:13), forgives me when I fail, and provides the path of victory through His precious Word!

1 Corinthians 10:13

Making changes is never easy. Everywhere we turn, we are faced with temptation. But no matter what the Enemy entices us with, we have the power to say no. How? Through the power of God. The Lord promises that no matter how strong the urge, when we give that urge to Him, we can overcome. For He is faithful to never allow us to be tempted beyond our breaking point. And not only we will not break, God vows to give us an escape from any and all temptation. So when you feel weak, stand in God’s strength and you’ll be victorious every time!
