The Holy Spirit

June 16th – Luke 7:48

Luke 7:48

Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

I love the quote that says we tend to look at others through a magnifying glass while looking at ourselves through rose colored glasses. When I read about Simon I immediately felt indignant at how he looked upon the woman at the feet of Jesus. I thought, “Typical Pharisee. Can’t see his own sins through his sanctimonious forest of the sins of others.” Right then and there, God laid a conviction on my heart. It turns out, Simon wasn’t so different from myself. The Lord revealed to me that all of this time, I have been looking at others through the self righteous eyes of Simon. Before if anyone had asked, I would have said that I had forgiven others for hurts of the past. And it’s true, that many times I have prayed for a heart that is free of bitterness and anger. But after some serious soul searching, I realized that although my lips said forgiveness, my heart did not. We all need to take stock of our heart attitudes and makes sure we are offering the forgiveness that the Lord so generously offers to us.

December 7th – John 13:35

John 13:35

As one of His last acts before His sacrifice on the Cross, the Lord performed a task usually reserved for the lowest slaves in the house. He knelt and began to cleanse the feet of the disciples. Such an expression of self sacrifice, Jesus did as an example of humble love. Throughout His life on earth, everything Jesus did He did in love. And He made it perfectly clear that we are to do the same. But such a calling isn’t easy. For undoubtedly as soon as you make a commitment to love others, along a person will come as a test to your resolve. But the goal of the Christian walk is to become transformed into the image of Christ. And God never calls us to go it alone, nor to do what He asks in our own strength. Our strength comes from the power of the Holy Spirt. And through His power we can walk like Jesus and serve others joyfully and humbly. Our strength comes from the power of the Holy Spirt. And through His power we walk like Jesus and serve others joyfully and humbly.

July 4th – Galatians 5:22

Galatians 5:22

The moment we receive Jesus as our Savior, the Holy Spirit enters into our hearts and gets to work. And the result of His labors is evidenced by the spiritual fruit we produce. Described by Paul, this fruit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control. Throughout the Bible we are told of the importance of love. So no wonder Paul lists it first. But a very close second is joy. Because no matter our circumstances, God wants us to experience the fullness of His joy. An everlasting joy that can never be taken away. The Greek word for joy is chara, and is described as the natural reaction to the work of God, whether promised or fulfilled. There’s nothing that will humble us quicker than when we truly realize the favor and grace God shows us daily. So with thankful heats, how could the fruit of joy not be in spilled over into all we do!

May 30th – John 14:17

John 14:17

Knowing Jesus was about to ascend to the Father made the disciples feel lost and alone. But the Lord wasn’t leaving them to fend for themselves. Instead, Jesus would be sending them a Helper. Someone to continue guiding, teaching, and aiding them in God’s work. This person was the Holy Spirit. Once only available to a chosen few, now through the blood of Jesus, the Spirit comes to everyone who confesses Jesus as their Savior. The Spirit abides in us as we abide in Jesus. And through His power we are saved, filled, sealed, and sanctified. The Holy Spirit reveals to us God’s thoughts and truths. He intercedes to God on our behalf, and bestows His gifts upon us. And most of all, the Holy Spirit, fills believers with “all joy and peace” as they trust the Lord, causing believers to “overflow with hope” (Romans 15:13).

March 7th – Titus 3:5

Titus 3:5

What a wonderful God we serve. Knowing how wicked and sinful we are, God still wanted to save us. Not because of anything we did or could ever do to earn it. But all because of His amazing grace. And out of that grace, not only does He offer us salvation, but He refuses to leave us in our filthy rags of sin. Instead, through the Holy Spirit, God washes us clean, declares us righteous, and renews our hearts and minds. And all of this God does out of His great mercy for all who receive His precious Son, Jesus Christ, as their Lord and Savior.

Romans 5:5

We will all face hardships in our lives. And one of things that gets us through the bad times is hope. But where we place our hope can mean the difference between enduring the storm with peace and joy, or disappointment and shame. The fallen world in which we live, offers a hope that is fleeting and untrustworthy. However when we place our hope in God we can face any trial with confidence and perseverance. Because the unchanging, unmerited, and unconditional love of God which fills our hearts with a proven, unshakable, hope that comes from Him alone.

The evidence of our love for Jesus isn’t in our words, but in our actions. It’s easy to say we love the Lord, but is that love active in our lives?
