Trials

October 29th – 1 Peter 5:10

1 Peter 5:10

God’s Promise – “I have called you to My eternal glory in Jesus Christ.”

Peter makes it clear that there are no ifs, ands, or buts. As long as we are here on this earth, we will experience suffering. While Christians aren’t immune to trials and pain, we can find peace knowing God is always in control. And from His unending grace, our loving Father never lets us suffer in vain. For there is always a purpose for our pain, with no storm lasting longer than God allows. About suffering pastor Paul Chappell says, “Suffering is painful for us to endure or to see those we love endure. While our instinct is to flee trials, remember that even in the midst of suffering, God’s will is being done.” Although we must suffer a little while, one day soon God will call us home. And never again will we know anything but joy, gladness, and peace. But until that glorious day we can trust that with each trial, God establishes, strengthens, perfects, and matures us. Walking side by side with His children until they dwell with Him in eternity!

July 18th – Philippians 4:4

Philippians 4:4

When we’re hurting, being told to rejoice seems not only impossible, but particularly cruel. After all, how could God expect us to find joy in pain? But did you know that of all the books in the Bible, among the most joyful are the “prison epistles”? These are the letters written by Paul while imprisoned in Rome. The apostle had been falsely arrested, shipwrecked, bitten by a snake, beaten, and eventually beheaded. Yet through it all, Paul never lost his joy. Because his gladness wasn’t found in his circumstances. Rather, Paul’s joy was in the One who provided the love, peace, and strength he needed to endure every trial. And by following Paul’s model we too can rejoice always; even in the worst of circumstances. We don’t rejoice over the hurt, but we can rejoice over the Lord. Because He will use our situation both for our good, and His glory.

July 12th – Hebrews 12:2

Hebrews 12:2

As a little girl, whenever I had a problem the first person I’d turn to was my Grandma. And no matter the situation, her advice was the same. After listening patiently she would reply, “Honey tough times don’t last, tough people do…pray.” Difficulties are a part of life we can’t escape. And each of us has a race before us to run. But by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, we can run that race joyfully. Christ, our perfect example, endured torture, pain, sorrow, rejection, and betrayal. He despised the shame of being publicly crucified, yet He did so willingly. Why? For the joy of fulfilling the will of the Father, and the greatness of His reward. During the toughest times of our race, when we’ve hit a wall and can’t go one step further, we would do well to remember Jesus’ sacrifice. Knowing all He gave to redeem us, gives us our second wind so that we don’t, “grow weary and lose heart” (Heb 12:3) and finish the race in victory!

July 1st – James 1:1-2

James 1:1-2

I’m a morning person. I love the freshness of each new day and the promise it holds. That being said, I learned long ago that nothing sucks the joy out of the morning quicker than waking up and immediately turning on the television, or getting on the internet. Filled with stories of disasters, tragedies, and divisiveness, far from feeling encouraged or empowered, I feel joyless. So instead I try to start my day with goodness. A goodness that carries me through any trial. That means going to God first. For God is good. And not because He does good, but because He is good. The Lord is the constant and unshakable source of every good thing in our lives. Ruler and Creator of heaven and earth, there is no darkness in Him to be found. And in a world that grows darker by the day, keeping our focus on God and His goodness, allows us to experience joy despite an Enemy who seeks to steal it.

June 12th – John 16:33

John 16:33
I love the quote by preacher John Bunyan which says, “Temptations, when we meet them at first, are as the lion that roared upon Samson; but if we overcome them, the next time we see them we shall find a nest of honey within them.” The world is full of temptations and trials. And life for Christians has been promised by Jesus to be anything but easy. (John 16:1-4) Yet because the Lord has overcome the world, through Him, we can face anything. And the things that once tripped us up, we can overcome. To overcome means “to carry off the victory.” And that’s exactly what Jesus has done. He is the great Overcomer. And by the grace of God, He let’s us participate in that victory. So no matter what we face, if we remember the promises of the Lord, we can win every test and overcome every scheme of the Enemy.

No Greater Love – Psalm 116:15

Visiting the cemetery on Memorial Day has always been a family tradition. And each time I go I’m struck by the rows of flowers and flags, the somber feeling, and the looks on the faces of those lost in thoughts of remembrance and grief. The pain is palpable, as is the pride of the sacrifice made by so many. Without fail, John 15:13 always enters my mind, “Greater love has no other than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”

It’s easy to take for granted the freedoms that we enjoy as Americans. Freedoms that come at a steep price. And it’s just as easy to forget those who are left behind to deal with the crippling pain of loss and with the task of rebuilding their lives. They need our love, compassion, and help. And as we all have faced trials of our own and have found comfort through the Lord, it is our duty as His ambassadors to provide for the needs of those who are hurting. For as 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 reminds us, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

Our Father understands our grief, and promises to love us through our pain. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matt. 5:4) “He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds.” (Ps. 147:3) Why does God understand? Because the greatest Soldier of all who sacrificed everything was God’s only begotten Son; our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jesus gave up everything He had and knew to lay down His life and free us from bondage. He came to defeat the enemy of death, loving us more than He loved Himself. “We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” (1 John 3:16)

Romans 13:7 tells us to give honor to whom honor is due, and I can’t think of better recipients than those who gave their lives fighting to protect our land, lives, and freedoms; and to those dealing with the grief of losing a loved one. I read a saying once that said, “Grief is never ending. Yet although it never ends, it does change. It’s a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor is it a lack of faith. Rather, it’s the price of love”. We know that love is a gift from God. And He loves and grieves with each of His children. Nothing is lost on Him for, “precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones”. (Ps. 116:15)

So on this Memorial Day when we are enjoying the ones we love, take the time to remember those who have gone on ahead of us, and those left behind. Remind the ones struggling, and yourself if need be, that one day we’ll be reunited with those we have lost. We will all be together in the kingdom of God, living, loving, and worshiping Him forever with not a tear or sorrow in sight! I personally want to thank those who fought and died for me. Whose boundless bravery is a shining example for all to see! May God bless you and keep you.

April 25th – Romans 8:28

Romans 8:28

This world, ruled by Satan, is filled with evil. And each day grows darker than the one before. That’s why every fiber of my being cries out for the return of Jesus. Oh how I long for my glorified body, and to dwell with the Lord forever. Because let’s face it. This side of heaven is a tough place to be. We know Jesus Himself promised rocky times for His followers dwelling on earth. (2Tim. 3:12) And there’s not a single one of us who hasn’t been touched by suffering or faced trials. But the apostle Paul also gives us another promise. Everything we go through, God will use for good for those who love Him. All God asks, is that we trust in the uniquely wonderful plan He has for each of us. In patience, to continue loving, obeying, and praising Him, in good times and bad. All while remembering that while we wait for Christ’s return, neither a smile nor a tear is wasted.

March 26th – James 1:6

James 1:6

We all face times of trial and tribulation. And God allows these times into our lives to strengthen both our faith, and obedience. Struggles also remind us how impossible it is to navigate life on our own. But thankfully, we never have to face anything alone. That’s why James tells us to pray for godly wisdom to see us through. But the apostle then goes on to say that when we pray, we need to do so without doubting. Because without faith, we will be tossed around whichever way the wind blows. And instead of being filled with God’s wisdom, peace, and goodness, we will be carried away by a sea filled with false teaching, temptation, and fear. We serve a loving, generous, God who loves nothing more than to answer the prayers of His children. Children who stand rooted in the faith that He will see them through!

January 18th – Romans 8:28

Romans 8:28

In this fallen world disappointments and discouragements are an unfortunate part of life. After all, we are all sinners living among sinners. Therefore we’re bound to experience trouble. Which is why this verse is one we should not only memorize, but hold unto tightly. For in this verse there is hope. I truly believe if we will only rest in this massive promise, our lives will be more solid and stable. And when Satan sends those negative thoughts that try to bowl us over, we will be able to stand strong! How you ask?

When you are hurting find God’s purpose in your suffering by prayerfully asking yourself:

  • Could God be using this trial to increase my faith?
  • Could God be using this trial to build my character?
  • Could God be using this trial to prepare me to better serve Him and others in some way?

Answering these questions will help you discover God’s plan for your life. And I can honestly promise you, that when you see the “big picture” (the one with God in it and on it!), you not only will be able to stand, but find yourself happy, rejoicing, and giving thanks for it all!!

Blessings, Sue

December 20th – Malachi 3:1-6

Malachi 3:1-6

With Christmas in just a few days, everyone is busy with last minute preparations for the holiday. But more importantly than the tree, gifts, or food, is the preparation we make in our hearts for Jesus. Malachi refers to this preparation as refinement. Gold and silver go through fire to remove the impurities and become precious metals. And as followers of Jesus, we go through the fiery trials of life that shape us into the precious image of Christ. Yet unlike the Israelites who were preparing for Christ’s first coming, we are preparing ourselves for His glorious second coming. God fulfilled His promise of a Savior with the birth of Jesus Christ. And soon He fulfill His promise of Jesus’ return. And this time the babe lying in a manger will come as the conquering King of the world, who comes to reign perfect judgement and righteousness. Are you ready?
