Unconditional Love

December 16th – Corinthians 13:4-8

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Every day society bombards us with false ideas of what love is. It makes us think that love just happens to us, and we have no control. For we’ve all heard the expressions “the heart wants what the heart wants”, or heard someone described as “hopelessly in love”. But the Bible teaches completely the opposite. Love is a choice we make, something we can control, and the fruit of a spirit filled life. And here in 1 Corinthians 13, Paul gives us a beautiful description of what a true, faithful, brotherly, selfless, love looks like. The same love perfectly exampled by Jesus. Such a love, “is an unconditional commitment to imperfect people. A love for the utterly unworthy, and a love which proceeds from a God who is love. It’s a love lavished upon others without a thought of whether they are worthy to receive it or not.” (Grace Notes) This is the love that Jesus gave so willingly to us with His sacrificial death on the Cross, and the same love He calls us to reflect.

October 16th – Luke 12:6-7

Luke 12:6-7

God’s Promise – If I look after the sparrows, I will certainly look after you.”

With rising food, oil, and energy costs, people are worried. But as Christians we know that from His great love, our Father in heaven promises to provide for our every need. Look at the sparrows. As one of His creations, God cares so much about the tiny bird, Jesus says that not one of them will fall unless God wills it. (Matt. 10:29) So how much more valuable are His children? The ones He painstaking created in His own image? Did you know the average person has around 100,000 hairs on their head at any given time? And God knows the exact number each person has. Because to Him, we are of great value. He loves us unconditionally, perfectly, and without end. As His beloved children, our Father in heaven cares about every part of our lives. He is deeply devoted to everything He creates. And how thankful are we that even if the whole world rejects us, God never will!

September 18th – Esther 4:14

Esther 4:14

Esther was a young queen in over her head. Told by her cousin Mordecai about the prime minister’s plot to kill the Jews, the fate of her people laid heavy on her small shoulders. Yet Esther knew where to go; straight to God. For three days and nights Esther sheltered in His presence through prayer and fasting. And as she grew closer to the Lord, Esther received the wisdom and courage she needed to save her people. Life is hard. And trying to do it on our own is near impossible. But thankfully, as Christians we never have to face anything alone. Because God is there welcoming us to come to Him. To spend time in His presence, bathing in His strength, mercy, and guidance. A place of refreshment, the arms of the Lord is where we experience His perfect peace. Where we find the answers we seek, the wisdom of God’s counsel, and the warmth of His unconditional love.

September 14th – Galatians 1:8

Galatians 1:8

Paul tells us to fear those who teach a false gospel because they are accursed and their message leads to death. Whether it’s an ear tickling gospel, a prosperity gospel, or a works based gospel, if it doesn’t line up with God’s gospel, it’s a false gospel. False gospels keep us chained to rules and laws. They lead to destruction by telling us there are many roads to God. And false gospels tell us that through our own efforts we can earn everlasting life. But the one true gospel of Jesus Christ gives us freedom and joy, not bondage and despair. It wipes clean our record, declaring us innocent and blameless. As fallen people with fallen hearts, we cannot fathom such a pure, perfect, and unconditional love as God’s. A love whose height knows no limits, and whose depth knows no end. And most wonderful of all, a love not earned but offered freely to everyone who receives Jesus as their Savior. This is the Good News of Jesus Christ. And this is the one and only true gospel!

April 27th – John 15:9

John 15:9

It is often said the three most beautiful words one can hear are, “I love you.” And these words are what Jesus says to each of us as His beloved. But the love Christ has for us surpasses any other kind of worldly love we could ever know. For His is an all encompassing, unmerited, unconditional, and unmeasurable love. A love with no beginning, and no ending. One that is selfless, sacrificial, and beyond any love this world could offer. And better yet, Jesus wants to remain in His perfect love. Letting it guide, protect, and fill us with His precious grace and peace.

February 4th – 1 John 4:8

1 John 4:8

In the dictionary love is defined as a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person. What a  perfect way to describe one of the most beautiful truths in the Bible; that God is love. Everything He does flows from that glorious, unmerited, love; including sending His Son to become a sacrifice for all. As His children, we are to reflect God’s loving character for the world to see. Because is a great gift to love and to be loved. And we in turn need to bestow that gift to others as unconditionally as God bestows it to us.
