Get Behind Me Satan! – Matthew 16

Matthew 16

In Matthew  16:23 when Jesus was foretelling His death to His disciples, Peter pulled Jesus aside saying it would never happen. But immediately the Lord recognized the work of the Enemy saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” And just like he tried with Jesus, The enemy is constantly at work trying to infiltrate our minds, bodies, and spirits.

Satan would love nothing more than to see us weak, hurt, and hopeless.  But the truth is he has no power over us. He was defeated at the Cross by the work of our Savior, Jesus Christ. And We can claim victory in every battle because we have the power to bind and stop him in his tracks. For as believers, we are indwelt with the power of Jesus through the presence of the Holy Spirit.

1 John 4:4 tells us, “You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” This means we have authority over Satan and all his demons.  But how exactly do we bind the enemy by the power of the Holy Spirit? I love the wisdom from Dr. Charles Stanley

1.  Claim the name of Jesus.  “The Bible tells us to pray in Jesus’ name. Throughout the New Testament, the apostle’s healed and performed the works of the Lord in Jesus’ name. (Acts 3:6). When you and I use the name of Jesus, we are doing what He called us to do; act with authority over the enemy by demonstrating who we are in Christ.”

2. Claim the blood of Jesus. “We dare not go into battle with Satan without the protection of the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Through Scripture we learn that His blood is our protection and the basis of our redemption.  (Ex. 12; Matt. 26:28; Eph. 1:7; Heb. 9:11-28). The blood of Christ’s sacrifice paid the price of sin and eternally broke the power of Satan over us.”

3.  Claim the Word of God.  “Jesus put an end to Satan’s words by quoting Scripture. He confronted the enemy with the Word of God, and we must do the same thing. Jesus spoke the truth of God’s Word, and it stopped Satan immediately. Jesus didn’t argue with the devil or get into a battle of words. God’s Word was enough to claim victory.”

As the battle rages around us, the power to defeat Satan is available to each of us. We have the ability to deal with the enemy by the almighty, supernatural power of God. And Through that power we have the right to declare Satan defeated, bound, and powerless!
