Abba Father

April 25th – Psalm 146:1

Psalm 146:1

Many are the reasons to give God the glory. Creator and Ruler of all things, He champions the weak, fathers the orphans, heals the afflicted, and blesses all who put their hope in Him. Everyday there are reasons to give thanks to the Lord. And God covets the praise of His people. But not for His benefit. For ours. Because I know for me, no matter how low I feel or bad the circumstance, nothing soothes my soul like giving glory to God. It brings peace to my troubled mind. Joy to my hurting heart. And brings me close to my Abba, Father, who welcomes me with open arms of love. Most of all praising the Lord humbles me. For it reminds me of how much I fail God daily and still somehow, He wants me anyway. How could such an amazing and unmerited love not make my heart burst with songs of worship and thanksgiving!

November 29th – 1 John 3:1

1 John 3:1

I am thankful to call God my Father

Jesus came to be our perfect substitute. Taking our place, He paid our sin debt allowing us to be redeemed to the Father. Because of His sacrifice we are not only forgiven of our sins, freed from the burden of the Law, we are also adopted as sons and daughters into God’s heavenly family forever. Imagine that! No longer called slaves, but heirs to the kingdom through the blood of Christ. But it gets even better. In one of my favorite verses Paul says, “Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying ‘Abba! Father!” (Gal. 4:6) Abba is an Aramaic term which closely translated means Daddy. What a privilege to be able to call God, Daddy! As sinners on our own we can never be worthy of being in His family.  But because of Jesus not only does God accept us, He calls us His own. And in this gift giving season, God’s gift of adoption is one I am forever thankful for.

October 27th – Romans 8:16-17

Romans 8:16-17

God’s Promise – “Jesus is happy to share His inheritance with you.”

We’ve all heard the saying, “you can pick your friends but you can’t pick your family.” But God in His goodness gives us the chance to do just that. Because once we choose to receive Jesus as our Savior, we become adopted heirs into God’s family. His beloved children reborn through the blood of Jesus. The Holy Spirit who comes to indwell us, testifies before the Lord that we are His. And we receive the great privilege of calling God, “Abba, Father!” Better still, we become joint heirs with Jesus to all the glories of God’s kingdom! Our Father in heaven never intended for us to walk through this life alone. That’s why He created families. And He longs for each of us to join His. To receive His perfect love, comfort, and guidance. God invites us to climb unto His lap, and rest in the arms of a loving Father. The One who gave His only begotten Son to offer adoption papers to the world!

October 12th – Isaiah 49:15

Isaiah 49:15

God’s Promise – “Even if your mother forgets you, I will never forget you.”

It is often said there no greater love than the love a mother feels for her child. Yet as Christians we know there is a greater love still, the love God has for everyone He calls His own. Because even though some are blessed with wonderful parents, others aren’t so lucky. And still others have no parents at all. And that’s why God’s love is so great it surpasses even a mother’s love. A love that calms every fear, nurses every hurt, and provides for our every need. Earthly parents are fallible. But not our Heavenly Father. When others reject us, He will not. When our own family forgets us, God never will. Psalm 27:10 reminds us, “Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.” For He has engraved us on the palms of His hands. And those who receive Jesus as their Savior will be forever loved by our Abba, Father. And if we have His love, we need no other!

October 11th – Jeremiah 3:19

Jeremiah 3:19

God’s Promise – “I am happy to treat you as My child, and I hope you will call Me Father.”

Of the many names for God, one of the most beautiful is “Abba”. And what a wonderful privilege it is for us who are nothing but mere dust, to call the Creator of all things Father. We call Him such because as He Himself declares, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.” (Jer. 1:5) Think of that! Even before the first beat of our hearts, God knew everything there is to know about us. And not only did God fearfully and wonderfully create us, (Ps. 139:14) He knows us by name,(John 10:3), how long we will live, (Ps. 139:16), and all we were created to be. (Eph. 2:10) And before we are born, He sets us apart for the purpose that is uniquely ours. Our Heavenly Father wants for nothing. Yet He wants us. Nothing bring Him greater joy than when one of His children comes home. Because He longs to guide, love, comfort, and most of all, to call us His!

June 24th – Hebrews 4:16

Hebrews 4:16

Being heirs with Jesus comes with some pretty awesome privileges. And one of them is the freedom to approach God anytime, anywhere. Because of the reconciliation we receive through the blood of Christ, no longer are we enemies of God. Instead we are His beloved children who can approach our Abba Father, not to receive judgement, but mercy. God wants us to come before Him not with fear, anxiety, or shame. But to come boldly, confident in our standing through Jesus. For He loves us like no other, and has everything we need in every situation. God wants a close, personal, relationship with each of us. And He wants to help, and love us through our trials. So go to Him in prayer, lay your heart at His feet, and receive His mighty grace and help in your time of need!
