God’s Glory

August 2nd – 2 Samuel 9:3

2 Samuel 9:3

After waiting over 15 years to become king, David finally had it all. The power, the riches, and the kingdom. And you’d think he’d spend his time basking in his own glory. Yet instead, one of his first concerns was showing kindness to the heirs of his enemy. In reality, David owed Saul nothing. And who would blame him for wanting revenge after all Saul put David through? Besides, no one would know any different. Because the only living heir was a cripple boy named Mephibosheth. He was the son of David’s best friend Jonathan, whose existence had  been hidden from the world. But even if no one else ever knew of David’s actions, God would. And so out of the kindness shown to him by the Lord and his love for Jonathon, David restored to Mephibosheth Saul’s riches and a gave him a place of honor at David’s table. Nothing is hidden from the Lord. And being kind for the benefit of His eyes alone is the sweetest kindness of all.

To Him Goes The Glory – 2 Samuel 20:1-24:25

2 Samuel 20:1-24:25

In the final chapters of 2 Samuel, David’s reign as the King of Israel is nearing its end. David was a shepherd, warrior, hero, king, psalmist, and a sinner. And through it all he never lost his faith or his desire to live for the Lord. Now in his final years, he reflects on all that God has done for him and writes a song of thankfulness and love for the Lord. “I call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised.” (v. 22:4) …

July 27th – Psalm 66:20

Psalm 66:20

It’s easy to make promises to God when we feel surrounded by His glory. Those times we experience a spiritual, physical, and emotional closeness with Him. Usually it’s due to a received blessing, an answered prayer, or a need fulfilled. And in our thankfulness, we swear to never again forsake God and to faithfully follow His will. Then life goes on, and it’s business as usual. And slowly our focus wanders away from the Lord. Our time and energy is spent once again pursuing our fleshly desires. And instead of trusting Him, we attempt to meet our needs on our own. But the joyful news is this. No matter how much we reject God, He will never reject us. And never will He withhold His precious love. When we honestly repent and call out to Him, He forgives and welcomes us back into His loving arms.

July 25th – Leviticus 10:3

Leviticus 10:3

The High Priest was considered the greatest religious position of all who served at the temple. Aaron, the brother of Moses, was appointed the first one by God. But unlike Jesus, our perfect High Priest, Aaron was far from sinless. Time and again when put to the test, he stumbled. And although he received God’s forgiveness, Aaron experienced heartbreaking consequences for his compromise and sin. His story reminds us that no matter the circumstance, God requires complete obedience; demanding the honor He alone deserves. Yet even in those times when we fall into sin, our hearts can still find joy. For God’s grace and mercy knows no bounds. And when we come to Him in repentance, He is quick to redeem and restore us. So the next time we are faced with compromising or obeying, we would do well to remember Aaron. He learned the hard way that we serve a holy God who insists on being treated as such.

May 29th – Matthew 24:30

Matthew 24:30

I love stargazing with my son. And there’s nothing more frustrating than just missing a shooting star. Jesus says when He returns, there will be no missing it. The sun and moon will go dark. Stars will fall from the sky. Even the very heavens themselves will be shaken. And everyone from the four corners of the earth will witness the glorious spectacle. All will see the Son of Man descending to earth on the clouds of the sky. All will see His great power and glory revealed. A wonderful and joyful sight for Christians. Yet those who don’t know Jesus as their Savior, will mourn at seeing the Lord. For the second coming of Christ marks the end of the age. And unbelieving hearts will feel deep regret at not receiving His gift of pardon when they had the chance!

May 23rd – Jeremiah 9:24

Jeremiah 9:24

It’s been said that humility doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. And there’s no better example of this than Christ. From start to finish, Jesus always put the will of the Father before His own. He never boasted of His great power, nor sought His own glory. Instead, the Lord’s joy was found in being a servant. He gave His life to give us the grace we don’t deserve. And apart from Him, there is nothing in us worth boasting about. No amount of money, fame, or power can stack up against the privilege of calling Jesus, Lord. The mighty Creator of the universe left His glorious throne in heaven to come to earth to save you and me! And through the blood of His Son, we get the amazing honor of calling Him Father. And through the indwelling of His Spirit, the wondrous privilege of knowing Him intimately! Now that’s something for Believers to brag about!

May 20th – Exodus 24:3

Exodus 24:3

Imagine being an Israelite. Personally chosen by God to enter into a glorious covenant with Him. Witnessing His power firsthand. Traveling day and night surrounded by His glory and protection. Now imagine experiencing all of that only to turn around and reject His love. It’s easy to make a covenant with God when we feel surrounded in His glory. Maybe it’s because of a received blessing, answered prayer, or a need fulfilled. We resolve to faithfully follow His will and not our own. Then life goes on. And our focus wanders on things other than our relationship with the Lord. We spend our time and energy pursuing our fleshly desires. And instead of trusting Him, we attempt to meet our needs on our own. But the wonderful news is this. No matter how much we reject God, He will never reject us. He is always there waiting to welcome us back into His loving arms.

April 18th – Matthew 26:36-46

Matthew 26:36-46

Located at the foot of the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, (which literally means “oil press”) consisted of a small grove of olive trees. A fitting place since it was there that Jesus was spiritually pressed. It’s often said that our true nature is revealed during times of pressing. And how we face trials and suffering shows the depth of our relationship with God. At any time Jesus could have walked away. He could have returned to His glorious throne in heaven and never once suffered for our sins. But instead He choose God’s will over His own, and obedience regardless of the consequences. And when God didn’t remove His cup of suffering, Jesus let nothing stand between Him and that cup.

There will be times when we will find ourselves face down in our own Garden of Gethsemane. When God permits suffering and we are pressed spiritually to the point of agony. It’s then when we need to follow the example of our Lord. First, in fervent prayer we are to cry out to our Abba, Father. Emptying before Him our hearts filled with fear and sorrow. And when His answer is for us to endure, we are to humbly submit before God saying, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” Drinking the cup of suffering is never easy. But we need to trust that God’s plans are always best, and used for both our benefit and His glory. Most of all remembering that His grace is everything we need to carry us through. (2 Cor. 12:9)

March 29th – Romans 8:26

Romans 8:26

Isn’t it comforting to know that God’s Spirit takes the deepest prayers of our hearts and not only beautifies them, but perfects them? And He promises to answer them in the way that is in our best interest? Just think for a moment how deeply we are loved. How God longs for sweet fellowship with us and to bless us in spite of ourselves. But why? Why has God provided all we need to help us when we can’t even find the words to pray?

The reason is because God wants to show us the riches of the glory of His grace. The Holy Spirit creates those deep groanings and then carries them to the Father. Our Father who not only hears, but performs what the Spirit asks, ultimately bringing God the glory. When we are battle worn and weary. When we don’t know how to pray, or at a complete lost for words, He knows!

The One who searches our hearts and knows our thoughts before one is ever spoken, stands ready to intercede on our behalf. And we can trust that God will bring about the circumstances which magnify Christ in the best way and bless us as well. What an awesome God! Full of grace and mercy, He has planned for even our times of weakness and loves us far more than even we could ever comprehend!

Blessings, Sue

All The World Is Not A Stage – Matthew 6

In Matthew chapters 5-7, Jesus delivers His most famous sermon of all, The Sermon on the Mount. In it He instructs us how to live a life that is both dedicated and pleasing to God. And in chapter 6, Christ makes very clear the importance of doing the right things for the right reasons. Saying, “Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.” (v. 6:1)
