Spiritual Milk

February 23rd – 1 Peter 2:2-3

1 Peter 2:2-3

Like a newborn needs the life giving nourishment of a mother’s milk, Christians need the nourishment of the spiritual milk of God’s Word. Because God’s Word is living and life giving. And it is tailored to provide us with the spiritual comfort and nutrition that we need to grow and thrive. Just as breast milk changes to meet the needs of an infant, God tailors what we receive from the Bible to meet our spiritual needs. I can read through a passage of scripture that I’ve read countless times before and God may show me something completely new. Something that meets my current needs and broadens my understanding. Showing how He is working in my heart and life at that particular time. And it is the the sweetness of those experiences that makes me thirst for more.

Do you remember the popular ads for milk? The ones where various celebrities pose with milk mustaches proudly displayed and the caption “Got Milk?” This ad campaign started to emphasize the necessity of always having milk on hand. And the unfortunate struggles of running out. The evidence of their thirst quenching experience is proudly displayed above a beaming smile. I think that our time being nurtured by the milk of God’s Word should leave similar evidence for the world to see. They should see that something has been tasted and left our spirits satisfied with God’s goodness!

Blessings,

Becky

February 19th – 1 Peter 2:2

1 Peter 2:2

Like babies who feed on the goodness of their mother’s milk, Christians likewise need to feed on the goodness of God’s pure, spiritual milk. For it is the milk of God’s Word which draws us close to the Lord. And through it, we grow and mature in our walk of faith. And that is God’s desire for our lives. To be continually feasting on the wisdom of the Bible. To yearn for His life giving nutrients that allow us to progress in grace, wisdom, and knowledge of the Lord. That’s why it’s so vital to spend time in God’s Word daily. For just like food fuels the body, the Scriptures fuel the soul. Equipping us daily to face whatever comes our way. How is your appetite? Are you starting each day empty and hungry? Or are you filling your mind body, and soul, with the perfect nutritional spiritual milk of the Gospel?

July 19th – 1 Corinthians 3:3

1 Corinthians 3:3

In his letter to the Corinthians Paul teaches that there are two types of believers. One he calls spiritual Christians, and the other carnal, or fleshly Christians. Both have been given freedom through Jesus Christ. Yet it is only the spiritual Christian who exercises this freedom by walking in obedience to God. The spiritual Christian knows the flesh produces nothing good, and submits to the work of the Holy Spirit in order to spiritually grow. Sadly, the carnal Christian is still stuck in bondage, a slave to the flesh.  A carnal Christian survives on mere “spiritual milk” instead of the soul filling, meaty Word of God. They are anchored to their worldly ways, never maturing in faith. God never wants to see us so easily set aside the freedom that cost Him so much. So out of hearts of thankfulness, may we each strive to grow in both grace and knowledge of the Lord. And may our walk with Him never be at a stand still or a step backward.
