Psalm 145:18

Psalm 145 known as David’s Psalm of praise, celebrates the greatness, goodness, and grace of God. Our God who satisfies “the desires of every living thing”. Who is “faithful in all He does” and “near to all who call on Him in truth.” But what does it mean to to call on God in truth? It means coming before the Lord in complete and open honesty. Pouring out all of our hopes, fears, troubles, and sins. Holding nothing back from the One who knows us better than we know ourselves. To lay all we are and have, the good and the bad at His feet. And trusting in His guidance, healing, forgiveness, and great love. For when we hold nothing back in complete vulnerability, it is then we experience the fullness of God and a closer walk with our Heavenly Father.

Psalm 65:4

One of the hardest things that Christians wrestle with is predestination. How in His sovereignty, before the creation of man, God decided who He would draw to Himself. And although we might not understand His reasoning or methods, we can overflow in gratitude. Gratitude for being one of those God calls His own. Once we were all enemies of the Lord, separated by our sin and sentenced to death. But in His love and mercy, God sent His only begotten Son to redeem and reconcile His beloved children back to Himself. And that includes you and me! How awesome is that! God chose us to draw near to Him and dwell in His courts. To be satisfied abundantly with the goodness of His house. And to His children, our Father in heaven promises an eternity spent by His side, never again to be separated from the God of our salvation!

February 8th – Psalm 69:13-15

Psalm 69:13-15

The phrase, ” in an acceptable time” grabbed my attention today. David is very aware of what’s going on. He senses the rising tide around him. The floodwaters of trouble are beginning to engulf him and he feels like he’s being swallowed up. Can you think of a time in your life where you felt like David? I can. But David offers us a lifeline. For in the midst of his troubles, David stops to renew his commitment to the Lord once more, and so should we.

I remember as a new Christian this desire to run out ahead of God, (not that I still don’t do that today at times.) Just as soon as I got what I thought was a perfect idea, I took off and ran with it! And God would let me go as though He was waiting for me to spend all my energy, grow weary, and fall on my face. For only then I’d look up! Only then was I ready to sit quietly and listen to God’s plan. I honestly can’t count the times God picked me up, brushed me off and set me on my feet once more so that then we could do it together. I sense this is what is happening here with David.

“In your great love and mercy, O God, answer me”

David appeals to the rich mercy of God. Where would we be without His mercy and love? And how blessed are we that we can appeal to these incredible attributes at any time, knowing He will hear and show us His mercy? O beloved, I pray we never take that for granted. For with misery, no attribute is more sweet than mercy. And when coming under attack, the multitude of mercy is a treasure.

“With Your sure salvation”

Beloved, here’s the key! Our salvation that was paid for by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and given to us freely as a gift is not factitious, nor a changeable thing- here today and gone tomorrow, but SURE, dependable, steady; the rock in which to stand firm on!

As I meditated on these verses I began to see that God is using these to teach us. He’s teaching us the art of wrestling in prayer. Of taking hold of what we are sure of , and setting it before our Father when we and our flesh and abilities are exhausted. I’d love to know your thoughts.

Psalm 73:28

Do you ever get frustrated trying always to do the right thing only to see the wicked prosper? Asaph, who was a mighty worship leader, felt the same. And he too wondered if walking with God was really the route to happiness. Christianity isn’t an easy path to follow. And when we see the sinful living joyfully and well, our human nature can fall into the temptation of wanting to live the same. But as Asaph realized, growing closer to God is always the path to victory. For unlike unbelievers, we have a mighty fortress, a place of refuge, and a rock of salvation in the Lord our God. And there is no better place to be than sheltered in Him. And so like Asaph we too can declare, “it is good for me to draw near to God.” We can trust in the Lord for our safety and declare boldly all of God’s marvelous works!

Psalm 55:22

Between the government, social media, and news outlets, fear is peddled as a hot commodity. No wonder in today’s climate people are afraid to even step out of their front door. But God, in His great love, reminds us that as His children we need not fear. For the Lord our God is with us. And with His mighty hand He will provide, sustain, and strengthen us. And never will He let us be shaken. But for that to happen we have to trust in Him and His promises. And let’s be honest. It’s easier to have fear than faith. To act on emotion instead of in standing in God’s truth. Billy Graham once said, “Fear can banish faith, but faith can banish fear. Faith isn’t pretending our problems don’t exist, nor is it simply blind optimism. Faith points us beyond our problems to the hope we have in Christ.” A great hope that allows us to cast all our cares upon Him, knowing we are wrapped in God’s love, goodness, and mercy.

Psalm 25:5

For some, anxiety is brought on by worrying about the future or how future events will unfold. For Christians, we know that our eternal future is secured because Jesus settled that on the cross long ago. He is the God of our salvation. Each moment that passes between today and our last physical breath will be a journey that shapes our preparation for Heaven and our influence on this Earth.

No two lives will be the same and there are many obstacles and deceptions that the enemy will place in our path to make us falter, stumble and lose our way. The Psalmist knew that it was foolish to try and navigate life on his own. He knew that it was best to trust in the guidance of God. God wants us to be teachable in all of the moments and events that make up our lives. He wants to help us recognize truth and avoid deception. 

God also wants us to trust His timing. That can be hard for those of us who get anxious when things seem chaotic and we want to rush in to “fix” or handle a situation on our own. So many times I have been amazed to discover that when I place something in God’s hands and relinquish the details and outcomes to Him, He  gives me peace and He shows me His mighty hand at work. Sometimes He works to change the circumstances and sometimes He works within those circumstances to change me.  Either way, I am learning as the Psalmist that it’s always best to wait for the Lord….Becky

Psalm 89:1-4

We all have our favorite Christmas song, and singing it fills our hearts with joy and memories. And even though we all aren’t blessed with ear pleasing voices, the gift of praising God in song is one reserved for man alone. Each Advent season many songs are sung, including the Psalms. And Psalm 89 is on the list. Why? Because it contains God’s promise that a king from the family of David would forever be on the throne. A promise realized with the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As a great light of salvation, Jesus came as the King of the world to save us from darkness and sin. So Christmas or not, because of God’s great gift, I will forever sing of His lovingkindness. My lips will forever praise His name. And whether my voice is in tune or not, I will sing loud and proud of my God. Singing of His love, mercy, and of His Son, who came to lay down His life to save mine.

Psalm 66:19

Don’t you hate it when you’re trying to reach someone and your call goes straight to voicemail? That never happens with God. Through the privilege of prayer, we have a direct line of communication with God. And He’s always there, ready and eager to answer the call. Some Christians mistakenly believe that God only cares about the big stuff. But the truth is, He cares about every area of our lives both big and small. Prayer is a gift our heavenly Father gives to us so that we can come to Him with everything. Be it a petition, guidance, thankfulness, or to unburden our heart, God wants to be our first destination. For when we talk to Him, God promises to both listen and respond. And although we may not like the answer, we can give thanks that no prayer will go unanswered.
